Falkenstein can be explored through two closely connected features: the castle, a well-known landmark, and the castle park with its Rock Park. Theatre in the castle courtyard, a seasonal outdoor swimming pool and snow-dependent cross-country ski trails add different touches. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth matching the activities to the season you have in mind and keeping an eye on where advance registration or a current visitor notice is important.

Falkenstein Castle and the Rock Park

Falkenstein Castle was built in 1074 by the Bishop of Regensburg and is the town’s well-known landmark. The castle park extends across the northern part of Falkenstein, encompassing the preserved castle complex and a wooded granite crag. It is Bavaria’s second-largest natural and rock park, combining the castle complex with a striking rocky landscape.

The Rock Park is accessible via paths and can be explored on different routes. Named rock formations include “Frog’s Mouth” and “Hollow Rock.” The park authorities ask visitors to stay on the marked paths. From the castle’s keep, views stretch across the valleys and mountains of the Bavarian Forest. The castle tower is listed as accessible from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; check the latest official information before your visit.

Theatre and fairy tales at the castle

Since 1976, the Falkenstein Castle Courtyard Plays have offered theatre evenings in the castle courtyard every summer. This tradition gives the summer programme a lasting cultural connection to the town; individual seasons and programmes vary. If you would like to combine your visit with a theatre evening, check the programme for the relevant season.

Fairy-tale walks through the medieval castle include interactive activities, such as a performed fairy tale and a fairy-tale quiz. Advance registration is required to take part. Also check the latest dates and arrangements before planning this activity. Unlike the recurring summer theatre evenings, advance registration is therefore a particularly important step here.

Seasonal activities for different times of year

Falkenstein Family Outdoor Pool has a 50-metre sports pool and a heated leisure pool with a wide wave slide. For children, there is a paddling pool with a mini slide and sun sail, as well as a play area with a climbing frame, sandbox and water pump. As a seasonal outdoor facility, the pool operates during set hours; check the official information about the season before your visit. The sports pool, leisure pool and play areas cater to different kinds of outdoor swimming, without requiring you to plan visits to separate locations.

In winter, the Falkenstein municipality offers a total of 30 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails. However, the trails can only be groomed if snow conditions allow. They therefore require different planning from the outdoor pool or summer theatre: the season alone is not the deciding factor; there also needs to be enough snow.

If you are planning a stay around a fixed programme, the preparations vary accordingly: for fairy-tale walks, registration and current dates matter; for the outdoor pool, its seasonal opening hours; and for cross-country skiing, snow conditions. The castle, Rock Park and range of activities thus offer different starting points for planning your trip, without every activity requiring the same time frame.
