Bischofswiesen brings together a range of travel interests, each with something specific to explore: churches and art, an Alpine bog and scenic views, as well as cross-country skiing and downhill skiing. These themes can help shape your plans for your stay without requiring a fixed itinerary. The Maria Hilf Pilgrimage Church and the Church of Creation offer different cultural perspectives; in winter, activities at Aschauerweiher and Götschen are also available.
Churches and Local History
The Maria Hilf Pilgrimage Church was completed in 1798/99 and is the oldest church in Bischofswiesen. It is in the high-altitude district of Loipl. The Church of Creation offers a different architectural accent: its timber beam structure extends far into the church interior. The wooden picture panels in warm colours were created in 2008 by Christoph Merker, an artist from Schönau. Those interested in churches will find two distinct themes here: Maria Hilf’s long local history, and the timber structure and artistic design of the Church of Creation.
Another way to shape your stay differently is to visit the adventure playground by the school in Bischofswiesen. Its facilities include playhouses, a climbing net, a swing, a balance course and water features. Activities range from climbing and balancing to playing with water, making this a place to enjoy independently of church visits or winter sports.
Bog, Views and Winter Sports
The Böcklmoos is in the Strub district. Together with the neighbouring Dachlmoos, it is considered the largest and best-preserved Alpine bog in the Berchtesgaden Alps. For a different perspective on the landscape, visit the viewpoint at Kastensteinerwand, which offers a view of the Watzmann. The bog and the viewpoint represent two different aspects of nature that you can take into account when choosing what to do.
The Aschauerweiher cross-country skiing centre in Bischofswiesen has eight trails of all difficulty levels, with a total of 16 kilometres of trails. Weather permitting, the stadium loop is covered with machine-made snow and floodlit from Tuesday to Thursday until around 8 p.m. This gives you both the total length of the trail network and specific details about one individual loop to consider when planning. As snow and trail operations are seasonal, it is advisable to check current conditions.
The Götschen ski area serves as a training and competition venue for elite sports, as well as a family ski area for local residents and visitors. It therefore brings together two stated uses, without implying that specific activities are available for particular ability levels. Götschen Ski School offers professional ski and snowboard lessons. If you are planning to take lessons, check current availability directly with the ski school.
More to Explore in the Berchtesgaden Region
The Berchtesgaden region is the wider travel destination and offers additional regional experiences. Berchtesgaden National Park has a diverse network of hiking paths and alpine trails spanning 260 km. At the Haus der Berge, the panoramic trail brings the materials and plants of four habitats—water, forest, alpine pasture and rock—to life; it also offers views of the Watzmann, Hochkalter and Jenner. These two experiences focus on different things: an extensive network of trails and a path that brings together habitats and views.
The Berchtesgaden region also offers a distinctive underground experience: at the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine, visitors cross the underground Mirror Lake on a raft, 130 metres below ground, and see glittering salt crystals. Those interested in a gorge hike can follow a route through the Almbachklamm gorge, crossing 29 bridges and footbridges and climbing 320 steps, as well as passing through a tunnel blasted into the rock. The gorge is open seasonally and may close due to weather. Check conditions before your visit.
When looking for a hotel, you can start by deciding whether to focus your stay mainly on churches, the landscape or winter activities. The regional experiences in the Berchtesgaden region add further nature and cultural attractions to the mix.
