The Breitengüßbach gravel pit lake is a focal point for waterside activities. The extensive lake landscape northwest of the town was created by gravel extraction and offers locals and visitors opportunities for recreation and leisure. At the lake, you can fish, surf and sail. It also has two sandy beaches and a wooden bathing jetty; an opening connects the gravel pit lake to the Main waterway trail.

Local safety notices apply at the gravel pit lake. Take them into account when planning your time by the water.

Water, Nature and Trails

The “Klassenzimmer Natur” Breitengüßbach environmental centre covers around 130 hectares. Visitors of all ages can discover some rare animal and plant species there and learn about biodiversity and its protection through multimedia displays. Around 10 kilometres of surfaced trails, four nature trails and numerous learning stations about plant and animal life combine time outdoors with learning. While watersports and fishing take centre stage at the gravel pit lake, the environmental centre offers opportunities to observe nature and learn about species.

Four hiking trails have been explored and signposted in and around Breitengüßbach. Markers may change, so check them locally. The hiking trails differ in purpose from the four nature trails about plant and animal life at the environmental centre. Another activity is the “Unteres Gehäu Disc Golf Challenge” course in Breitengüßbach: it consists of 18 holes and offers a distinct playing experience alongside the hiking and nature trails.

Local History and Getting There

The parish church of St. Leonhard adds architectural history to the area’s nature and waterside attractions. Its 37-metre-high tower preserves the two lower storeys of a choir-tower church dating from the 13th century. This provides a tangible architectural landmark in the town’s history alongside its outdoor activities.

Breitengüßbach is part of the Greater Nuremberg Transport Association and is served by Omnibusverkehr Franken. If you are including public transport in your travel plans, check the timetables for your travel dates.

In the broader Bamberg destination

The range of attractions in the broader Bamberg destination extends beyond Breitengüßbach’s waterside and nature offerings. Weissenstein Palace near Pommersfelden is one of Germany’s major Baroque complexes. Its extensive gallery houses art-historically significant works by French, Italian, German and Dutch painters.

Ebrach Abbey was also extensively transformed into a palace-like Baroque complex in the 18th century by Leonhard Dientzenhofer; its Gothic church and rose window were preserved. Since 2004, the Museum of Ebrach’s History has been housed in the former Cistercian monastery and focuses on the history of the market town and the abbey.

Another nature attraction in the broader Bamberg destination is the Methusalem Tour around Ebrach through the Spitzenberg nature reserve. It leads to trees that are up to 250 years old or older and up to 144 centimetres thick.
