The Eglinger Filz was designated a protected landscape area in 1986; in 2003 it was also included as a Natura 2000 site (Special Area of Conservation). This designation was due to the presence of the rare southern damselfly. The Eglinger-/Ascholdinger Filz covers about 200 hectares and is the largest contiguous complex of moorland in the northern part of the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district. The Eglinger Filz is home to downy birch and sundew, as well as breeding bird species including the tree pipit, red-backed shrike and teal.

Moorland and hiking trails

Pupplinger Au also offers its own natural highlight: this nature reserve is known for its rare flowers and plants. Hiking trails run through Pupplinger Au; other trails cross the Eglinger Filze – Mooshamer Weiher protected landscape area. This gives you a variety of landscapes to explore on hikes in Egling. Check current trail conditions before setting out. In the wider Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen destination, the Tölzer Land health climate park has 37 routes along a network of more than 340 kilometres between Bad Heilbrunn, Bad Tölz, Kochel am See, Wackersberg and Lenggries. The Tölzer Land also offers six signposted Nordic walking routes ranging from 2 to 8.6 kilometres. One example of a short themed trail in Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen is the easy, 2.31-kilometre Benediktusweg, which runs from the information stele at the monastery car park to stele 12 in front of the Basilica of St. Benedict.

Explore Egling on foot and by bike

Egling has an extensive network of cycling routes. One regional cycling tour is called “Puppling-Deining-Eulenschwang-Thanning-Egling-Ergertshausen-Puppling” and passes through Egling. Hiking and cycling therefore offer two different options for planning your day. Check current trail conditions before setting off on a bike ride, too.

Churches, a castle and traces of the past

Harmating Castle is a small fortified castle on a hill; its core is believed to date from the Middle Ages. In Egling itself, the Catholic parish church of St. Nicholas is a tuff-stone hall church with a recessed choir and a west tower. Its core dates from around 1430. The church was given a Baroque makeover in the first half of the 18th century, and the tower was rebuilt in 1820/21. Its architectural history thus brings together several clearly distinct periods.

The Catholic pilgrimage church of St. Sebald is also a hall church with a recessed choir and dates from the second half of the 17th century. Another historic site is the Angermühle, a water mill housed in a building dating from the second half of the 18th century. Egling’s sights also include Celtic earthworks in the districts of Deining, Neufahrn and Endlhausen. The churches, mill and Celtic earthworks offer different points of interest from the moorland and trails.

When looking for a hotel in Egling, you could first decide whether nature and hiking trails or architectural history and historic sites are the main draw for you.
