Speicherz lies in a valley. For a stay, the village combines hiking opportunities with architectural and village attractions: a waterway nature trail runs along the Kleine Sinn; other sights include the sandstone church with its distinctive onion dome and the old village bakehouse at the bridge over the Schmale Sinn.
Hiking: two different routes
The “Der Mottener” Extratour is 16.5 kilometres long and is listed as taking 330 minutes. It runs through the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The stated duration is equivalent to five and a half hours and provides a concrete indication of the time needed for the route.
The waterway nature trail along the Kleine Sinn is four kilometres long and is suitable for hiking and cycling. The trail starts next to the “Zum Biber” inn or can be accessed via Oberzeller Straße in the Speicherz district. This gives you the choice between a shorter route that is also suitable for cycling and a much longer hike with a stated duration. The 330-minute duration applies to the Extratour, not to the waterway nature trail.
Buildings and village history in Speicherz
The sandstone church is distinguished by its distinctive onion dome. Another local attraction is the old village bakehouse at the bridge over the Schmale Sinn, which is also one of Speicherz’s sights. Together with the valley and the path along the Kleine Sinn, these offer a mix of landscapes, architecture and village history.
The two hiking options have different focuses: the waterway nature trail highlights the Kleine Sinn and its suitability for cycling as well as hiking. The Extratour combines its longer route with its location in the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. When planning, you can therefore decide whether the shorter route or the expressly stated duration of the Extratour matters more to you.
More trails and culture in the wider destination of Motten
In the wider destination of Motten, the municipality lies in the Rhön Nature Park, on the border between Hesse and Bavaria. The premium hiking trail “Der Mottener” passes through varied landscapes of forests, meadows and water. Named starting points include Speicherz village centre, the village square in Motten, the car park at the watershed between Motten and Kothen, and the hiking car park near Pilsterfelsen in Kothen.
Der Mottener leads to the Pilsterfelsen geotope, with a mineral spring, old weather crosses and a small biotope where beavers have made their home. The premium hiking trail also passes historic boundary stones between Bavaria and Hesse. A fish nature trail along the route provides information about the wildlife and plants around the Kleine Sinn. This gives the wider Motten area additional nature and landscape attractions alongside the trails and sights in Speicherz.
The cultural attractions in the wider destination of Motten are also located in other named places. The Werberger Stube in Kothen has been a museum and memorial to the resettled village of Werberg since 1987. Exhibits include items saved from Werberg church: its foundation stone, tower cross, bell and baptismal font. Old vestments, photographs of Werberg, and agricultural implements and tools are also on display.
In Kothen, the Historical Village Walk offers insights into the village’s past through information boards. This volunteer-led project was established to make the area’s varied history visible and accessible; it was carried out with the support of the municipality of Motten and the Brückenauer Rhönallianz. It offers a distinct cultural-history focus to complement the hiking options.
