In Alzenau, the castle, cultural trails, the wooded Hahnenkamm ridge and the wine-growing village of Michelbach offer different travel highlights. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether you would like to focus mainly on cultural history, hiking routes or a seasonal visit to the Waldschwimmbad outdoor pool. The sights and trails offer concrete points of reference for your plans.

Castle and Cultural Trails

Alzenau Castle was built around 1400, in connection with Alzenau being granted town rights. Today, it is at the heart of the “Wine and Lordship” cultural trail. Three European cultural trails created by the Archaeological Spessart Project also pass through Alzenau’s municipal area. Their information panels present archaeological, historical, geological and biological features of the cultural landscape. Potential highlights therefore include both the history of the town and the other topics explored along the cultural trails.

Access arrangements for the castle courtyards vary: the Lower Castle Courtyard is accessible during the district court’s opening hours and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Upper Castle Courtyard is opened for events. Check the current access arrangements before your visit; the stated hours for the Lower Castle Courtyard do not mean that the entire castle is freely accessible.

Hiking Trails of Different Lengths

The “Wine and Lordship” cultural trail runs from Wasserlos in a loop of about five kilometres to Alzenau; another loop runs about seven kilometres to Hörstein. The entire trail can also be hiked. The approximate distances give you two points of comparison for the loops, while the full route offers another option.

Another option is the “Forest and Pilgrimage” circular trail, which is about eight kilometres long. It runs from the castle car park via the Lehmgrube Zeller to the highest point in the municipal area, then on to the “Maria zum Rauhen Wind” pilgrimage church. The return route to the castle follows the Seven Sorrows Trail through the Kahltal valley. When choosing a route, you can therefore consider not only its approximate length, but also the destinations described for each one.

Michelbach: Museum, Rose Garden and Wine

Since 2006, the Michelbach manor house in the Alzenau district of Michelbach has housed the Alzenau City Museum. Exhibits, displays and media technology convey Alzenau’s history, shaped by border lines, regional autonomy and profound upheavals. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current access arrangements in advance.

The manor house has a garden that is freely accessible at all times. The rose garden blooms there in early summer. Michelbach is also the northernmost Franconian wine-growing village and is known for its vineyards. This gives your visit its own focus on town history, gardens and wine tradition, without prescribing a particular itinerary.

Hahnenkamm, Ludwig Tower and Outdoor Pool

The wooded Hahnenkamm ridge is 437 metres high and shapes Alzenau’s townscape. Ludwig Tower stands on its crest. It was originally built by the Freigerichter Bund in 1880 and remodelled in 2004. The ridge and tower offer a different focus from the cultural trails and their information panels.

The family-friendly Alzenau Waldschwimmbad outdoor pool is located above the castle. Its children’s bathing area includes a toddler pool with slides, spray nozzles and a spray column, as well as a paddling pool with a stream and weir for play. Check seasonal opening before your trip. This gives you two different pointers for planning your timing: the rose garden blooms in early summer, while the pool’s seasonal operating schedule should be taken into account.

Planning Your Journey and Stay

Westfrankenbahn operates a direct train service, the “Bembel,” from Schöllkrippen via Alzenau to Hanau. It enables Alzenau residents to travel by local public transport beyond the town limits. Check the current timetable before travelling. For your stay, you can match your preferred cultural and hiking highlights with seasonal activities, then look for suitable hotels in Alzenau.
