Schiltberg combines local ties to the forest with the history of Hofberg Castle and a cycling route that passes through the town. This offers different starting points for planning your trip: you can focus on the landscape and trails, or explore the history of the castle site. For a broader perspective on culture and nature, you can also include the wider Aichach-Friedberg destination in your plans.

Forest and Trails in the Holzland

Schiltberg Forest lies mainly in the eastern part of the municipality and is part of the Holzland. The wider Holzland area around Schiltberg has extensive, continuous woodland and a well-developed network of hiking trails. If you are planning a hike, focus on the Holzland around Schiltberg; the forest, in turn, brings the woodland theme directly into the municipality. Check the conditions on the relevant route before setting out on a hike.

Schiltberg can also be included in your plans for a cycling trip: the “Altbayerische Herzogstädte” route passes through the town. This is a different geographical connection from the hiking trail network in the Holzland. If you would like to include both activities, you can plan them as separate highlights rather than assuming they share a route. Check the current route conditions before setting off.

Hofberg Castle and Open-Air Stage

Hofberg Castle, also known as Schiltberg Castle, was built around 1200 by the Lords of Schiltberg. It later became the property of Duke Ludwig II of Bavaria and was destroyed in 1422. The Hofberg castle site is home to the open-air stage of the Hofberg Open-Air Theatre Association Schiltberg. Two different themes therefore come together in the same place: the castle’s medieval history and the stage located there. The historical record and the site’s present-day designation can thus be considered separately.

Cultural Destinations in the Wider Aichach-Friedberg Destination

If your trip takes you beyond Schiltberg, the wider Aichach-Friedberg destination offers further cultural attractions. Aichach is home to the Wittelsbach Museum in the Unteres Tor (Lower Gate); the town museum tells the story of the town. Aichach’s historic old town has also changed very little over the centuries. Together, the museum and old town offer a distinct focus on Aichach’s history.

In Friedberg, the pilgrimage church of Herrgottsruh was built between 1731 and 1753. It is considered one of the finest works of Bavarian Rococo. Friedberg’s Wittelsbach Castle stands on the site of a High Medieval castle built around 1257 under Duke Ludwig II the Strict. Inchenhofen offers a different focus: the Pilgrimage Museum in Haus St. Leonhard, a former Cistercian brewery building, displays iron and wax votive offerings, ploughshares, horseshoes, and neck and hand shackles. It documents the importance of Saint Leonhard and St. Leonhard’s Church as a much-visited pilgrimage destination.

There are also regional options for hiking and cycling: the Paartal hiking trail follows the middle Paar from Aichach to Gut Schenkenau in the district of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen and is 36.8 kilometres long in total. The Aichach-Friedberg district cycling map features 14 well-signposted themed cycling routes. These regional details complement the “Altbayerische Herzogstädte” route that passes through Schiltberg, without implying that it is part of the wider regional network.

Find Accommodation to Suit the Scope of Your Trip

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide first how much of the region you plan to visit. If Schiltberg itself remains the main focus, the forest, cycling route and Hofberg Castle can provide the thematic framework. If you want to include other parts of the wider Aichach-Friedberg destination, you can add the cultural and museum attractions in Aichach, Friedberg or Inchenhofen. Tailor your search to whether you are planning a stay focused on Schiltberg or a broader visit to the region.
