Fossils, medieval buildings and trails through Vellberg offer different ways to spend your stay. The 6 km ancient turtle themed trail connects Vellberg’s old town with the site where the ancient turtle was found in the Schumann quarry in Vellberg-Eschenau. At the “Fossil Box” experience station, visitors of all ages can search for fossils.

Discover fossils and history

Finds from the region are also the focus of Vellberg’s municipal Natural History and Local History Museum. The museum has been open since 1986. Exhibits include Celtic finds from Stöckenburg and fossils from the area around Vellberg, especially from the Eschenau shell limestone quarry. These include dinosaur finds and other fossils. The station, themed trail and museum collection offer different ways to explore this subject—from searching, to connecting with the place where a find was made, to viewing the exhibits.

Stöckenburg is described as the oldest settled part of the entire region. The Protestant St. Martin’s Church, considered the region’s original church, stands there. Its high altar comes from the Riemenschneider school. Here, two regional historical distinctions meet concrete insights into Vellberg’s history.

The Städtle, art and public guided tours

Public guided tours take visitors through the medieval Städtle of Vellberg. Towers, castles and historic buildings are among the sights, as is the underground defensive passage; knowledgeable town guides accompany visitors. If you plan to join a tour, check the latest dates in advance, as no current schedule is provided here.

Those who want to explore the Städtle on their own can also follow the sculpture trail: this circular route runs through Vellberg’s Städtle, with twelve sculptures along the way making art a discovery in its own right. The starting point is the information board by the Fiebich half-timbered house, Im Städtle 11. From July to October, the street gallery presents a temporary, annually changing exhibition featuring works by artists from Vellberg and the surrounding area. The art offerings therefore differ both in format and by season.

Hiking, cycling and the outdoor swimming pool

Seven circular trails invite visitors to hike in Vellberg; they range from 6 to 12 km in length. These details help you gauge how long a route is. Some hiking trails pass the wrought-iron landscape frame on Schönblickstraße. From there, you can enjoy a view of Vellberg’s skyline.

For cycling, the BühlerTour offers a different route length: it is 46 km long and runs from Geislingen am Kocher via Vellberg to Abtsgmünd, with Vellberg at its heart. By comparison, the local circular trails are listed as 6 to 12 km long. This makes it possible to compare the lengths of the different options directly, without combining them into a single route.

The Mineralfreibad Vellberg outdoor mineral swimming pool is close to the destination, on Mühlweg between Vellberg and Talheim, surrounded by wooded hills. It has a beach volleyball court and a football tennis net. During the outdoor pool’s opening hours, swimmers can play minigolf on 18 holes for a small fee. Minigolf is therefore available only to visitors to the outdoor pool and during its opening hours.

Wine Fountain Festival and seasonal planning

The historic Wine Fountain Festival has been held every year on the first weekend in July since 1968. Its highlights are the delivery of the wine tithe from the Unterland and the herald’s opening of the wine fountain. During the three-day festival, Württemberg red wine flows each year from the 1720 market fountain. The street gallery adds another seasonal feature to Vellberg, with its annually changing exhibition running from July to October.
