Dottingen offers a variety of reasons to visit: a Late Gothic church dating from 1605, the landscape around Eisenrüttel, and activities ranging from hiking to skiing. When planning your visit, it is worth checking the conditions for each. The ski lift operates depending on the weather, the Fliegerklause has seasonal opening times, and the circular trail offers a clearly defined hiking option. This lets you choose what to focus on without treating the activities as a single package.

Ski lift and sledding in Dottingen

At the edge of the forest in Dottingen, a district of Münsingen, there is a ski lift with two runs. The family run is about 550 to 600 metres long, and the steep slope is around 400 metres. Both runs are illuminated. Sledding is permitted free of charge outside the groomed run in the car park area. The lift’s operating hours depend on the weather, so check them before setting off. Both runs are illuminated, while sledding is permitted in the car park area outside the groomed run.

Circular trail and landscape on Eisenrüttel

The circular trail “MÜNSINGER WANDERTOUR 3: Around Eisenrüttel” starts at the Buchhalde hiking car park in Münsingen-Dottingen. It is 5.56 kilometres long, with 130 metres of ascent and 130 metres of descent, and takes about two hours and 15 minutes. This gives you the distance, elevation gain and time for the route, all of which you can take into account when planning your day.

The Höhnriß-Neuben nature reserve covers around 50 hectares and extends across the districts of Dottingen and Rietheim. It mainly comprises all or part of the Eisenrüttel, Neuben, Wiesach and Höhnriß fields. At Eisenrüttel in Dottingen is an extensive basalt deposit, considered a distinctive feature of the Swabian Alb. Finds of Celtic burial mounds from the area are partly on display at the Landesmuseum in Stuttgart.

Buchhalde in Münsingen-Dottingen is 866 metres high and the highest point in the town of Münsingen. In good weather, it offers views of the Alps and distant landscapes. Its elevation and weather-dependent views provide another specific connection to Dottingen’s landscape.

Church and aviation

The Protestant church in Dottingen dates from 1605 and is Late Gothic. This adds an architectural point of interest to the landscape and activities: its date and style provide a clearly defined landmark in the town’s history.

Münsingen-Eisberg gliding site can be reached via Reutlinger Straße; the airfield entrance is on the K6701 between Münsingen and Dottingen. The Münsingen-Eisberg Aviation Club (Luftsportverein Münsingen-Eisberg e.V.) invites visitors to experience flying for themselves on a passenger flight. The club’s training for members is separate and covers gliding, ultralight flying, touring motor gliders and powered flight.

The Fliegerklause serves food and drinks on Sundays and public holidays during the flying season, from April to October. Its opening is therefore limited to certain days of the week and to the season. If you are planning to stop for a meal, check the current hours before setting off.
