Seelbach combines distinctive architectural history with a variety of ways to explore on foot. Wittelbach is home to a Romanesque chancel-tower church, the LĂĽtzelhardt castle ruins rise above Seelbach, and the Geroldseck Quality Trail winds through a landscape dotted with further castle ruins and historic smithies. Whether you are looking for a shorter themed walk or a multi-day hike makes a clear difference when planning.

Culture and History in Seelbach

The Catholic Church of St Peter and Paul is in Wittelbach, a district of Seelbach in the Schutter Valley. It is one of the region’s last surviving Romanesque chancel-tower churches. The church was first consecrated in 1132; its tower dates from the 13th century and is Early Gothic. This means that two distinct periods come together in a single building.

The open-air performances are also part of the town’s cultural history. Every September since 2004, Seelbach’s monastery garden has been transformed into an open-air stage. The premiere was initially held in the grounds of Dautenstein Castle. A year later, the open-air theatre moved to the monastery garden in front of the community centre, where productions have been staged every year since. If you would like to combine your visit with a performance, September can serve as a guide when planning your trip.

Another recurring event is the Kätterlismärkt: the three-day market takes place every November and attracts up to 20,000 visitors. Regional delicacies are offered among traditional market stalls. The open-air performances and the market mark different points in the annual calendar—theatre in September and market activities in November.

Castle Ruins, a Chapel and a Historic Smithy

The Lützelhardt castle ruins stand at 461 metres above Seelbach and are the municipality’s oldest architectural monument. Their exposed foundations bear witness to three construction phases, revealing transitions from the Romanesque to the Early Gothic style. The Hohengeroldseck castle ruins are also in the surrounding area. They rise high above Seelbach and are a popular destination for hikers, families and history enthusiasts.

Guided tours of Hohengeroldseck castle ruins last about 90 minutes. If you would like to include a tour in your day’s plans, check for a suitable date for your visit. The Konrad Chapel offers a different perspective on the surroundings: it stands high above the valley at the edge of the forest and offers views of the Geroldseck and Lützelhardt castle ruins as well as the village of Seelbach.

The Geroldseck weapons smithy adds an insight into the history of traditional crafts to these historic sites. It was first mentioned in a document in 1280 and once used water power alone to make weapons for the knights of nearby Hohengeroldseck Castle. Today, the historic smithy is also the endpoint of the nature trail in the Litschental Valley.

Choose Hikes by Length and Focus

For a shorter walk, one option is the 1.5-kilometre nature trail in the Litschental Valley. It is suitable for pushchairs and ends at the historic Geroldseck weapons smithy. The Geroldseck Quality Trail, by contrast, is a much longer hike: at 34.4 kilometres, it connects Lahr-Reichenbach, Seelbach and Wittelbach with the ridges of the central Black Forest. From Seelbach, it passes two castle ruins and historic smithies before reaching a nature reserve. The route can be hiked in two day stages of about 20 kilometres each. This comparison can help you decide between a single outing and a hike planned in stages.

There are also three Nordic walking routes around Seelbach. All start at the sports ground and vary in length and difficulty. The local branch of the Black Forest Association regularly offers guided hikes. So, alongside routes you can choose for yourself, there is also a regularly scheduled guided option; you can check for specific hikes that suit your stay.

The Aktiv-Park starts at the “Tretenbach” car park in Seelbach and ends at the water-treading pool in Wittelbach. Eight outdoor fitness stations along the route are suitable for all age groups. Unlike the nature trail, with its historic destination, the focus here is on exercise and fitness equipment. You can choose between the options according to your preferred focus, while keeping in mind that the Quality Trail is considerably longer than a short walk.

For trip planning, recurring events offer clear seasonal reference points, while the hiking options differ mainly in length, difficulty and theme. Church architecture, theatre and the market offer cultural highlights; the nature trail, Aktiv-Park and Quality Trail provide different ways to explore the surroundings on foot.
