Ohlsbach has a well-developed network of signposted hiking trails. The routes vary in duration as well as in shade, sun, steepness, ease and panoramic views. When choosing a route, you can therefore weigh up the time required and the character of the trail together.
Hiking: Compare duration and trail character
“Omas Rundgang” and “Das Panoptikum” each take around an hour. Despite their similar duration, the trails have different characteristics: “Omas Rundgang” is easy, shady and relaxing; “Das Panoptikum” is steep and sunny and offers far-reaching views. At 75 minutes, “Die Schiffschaukel” falls between them in duration. It is easy and sunny and offers an interesting panoramic view.
Two routes are designed to take 90 minutes. The shady “Philosophen-Pfad” is described as mentally stimulating, while “Das Bumerang” is also shady, but easy. The comparison shows that shade alone does not make the trails alike: they also differ in their other described characteristics.
Several options are available for a hike of about two hours. “Das Karussell” takes 120 minutes and is shady and easy. “Das kleine Paradies” also takes 120 minutes; it is easy and interesting, offers distant views and is shady in places. It is described as worthwhile. “Die Drehscheibe” is a 120-minute circular route, shady and cool, easy to walk and offering panoramic views as well as many options. Two access points are listed for this circular route: via Ortenberg-Freudental or Ohlsbach-Nothalde. Parking is available at Ohlsbach-Nothalde.
“Im kühlen Grund” takes longer, at 150 minutes. The route is shady and cool and can be walked comfortably. “Das Riesenrad” is scheduled to take 300 minutes. Features of this route include a mountain inn and views of the Vosges, the Rhine Valley and the Black Forest mountains with the Kinzig Valley.
Chapels and sacred monuments
The Maria im Weinberg Chapel stands among the vineyards above Ohlsbach. From there, you can look out over the village and the valley. The chapel is a popular destination for day trips among locals and visitors, combining a specific place with sweeping views of the village and its surroundings.
The Maria-Hilf Chapel in Hinterohlsbach was built in 1850. The sacred roadside monuments in the municipality of Ohlsbach also offer historical points of interest: With the exception of the Mörderkreuz, they date from the late 17th century, though most are from the 18th century. Following restoration, the roadside monuments are in good to very good condition.
Forest, landscape and cycling
56 hectares of the Riesenwald forest are designated as a natural forest reserve. Nearby is the landscape around the Brandeckkopf, which is a protected area and serves as a refuge for endangered plants and animals. Another destination in Ohlsbach is the mineral spring with its graduation tower, which is popular with young and old alike.
Cyclists and mountain bikers can also find suitable routes around the municipality of Ohlsbach. Most tours follow cycle paths and forest tracks, as well as roads with little traffic. Options include family cycling tours, strenuous rides and leisurely trips through the Kinzig Valley. When planning, you can consider two questions separately: What kind of ride would you like to take, and what type of surface is found on most of the routes?
