Friedrichsfeld combines church and local history with railway connections; the Dossenwald adds trails and nature activities to the options nearby. There is also practical guidance for getting here: the town has two railway stations, one served by S-Bahn trains and the other by regional trains. This means cultural attractions and outdoor activities are complemented by clear guidance on rail travel. Mannheim is home to the Water Tower, built by Gustav Halmhuber in 1889; the same architect also contributed to the construction of the Reichstag in Berlin. The tower is 60 metres high, has a diameter of 19 metres and holds 2,000 cubic metres of water.
Churches and Local History
The area around Vogesenstraße and Neudorfstraße in the centre of Friedrichsfeld forms the historic centre of the district. French Reformed Huguenot families who settled in Friedrichsfeld built a church there in 1687.
The Johannes Calvin Church was built between 1900 and 1902 in the Romanesque Revival style, based on plans by Hermann Behagel. It is the only church in Germany named after John Calvin.
St. Bonifatius is a single-nave Gothic Revival church with a tower and was consecrated on 26 September 1899. The church houses the so-called “Anna Selbdritt” statue. It is considered the church’s oldest work of art and dates from around 1500. The term “single-nave” describes the basic layout, with one nave; the tower and Gothic Revival style add further architectural features.
