At the entrance to Todtnauberg, the BLACKFORESTLINE spans the Todtnau Waterfall. There are several perspectives to consider when choosing where to stay: trails to the waterfall, local history and the Fatima Chapel offer different themes. The wider Todtnau area adds its own nature, activity and cultural themes to these local points of interest.
Waterfall and BLACKFORESTLINE
Various trails lead from Todtnauberg directly to the Todtnau Waterfall and onward to the BLACKFORESTLINE suspension bridge. A nature trail that is not accessible leads to the waterfall’s largest cascade. If you want to visit this cascade in particular, take its lack of accessibility into account when planning.
The suspension bridge is 450 metres long and sits around 120 metres above the waterfall. Its structure is supported by 76 mm steel cables and 16-metre pylons. The Todtnau Waterfall has a drop of 97 metres and is Baden-Württemberg’s highest natural waterfall. These measurements refer to different features: the bridge’s length and construction, its height above the waterfall, and the waterfall’s drop.
Local history and winter activities
Todtnauberg was founded around 750 years ago as a mining settlement in a high valley open to the south. The first holidaymakers, known as “summer visitors,” came to Todtnauberg in 1870. The founding of the ski club in 1906 gave tourism a further boost, as the village began to make a name for itself as a winter sports destination too. These three milestones tell different stories: the early settlement, the beginning of visitor tourism and the later rise of winter sports.
Tobogganing is also listed as an activity in Todtnauberg. This adds a specific winter activity to the history of winter sports.
Fatima Chapel on Bergerhöh
Fatima Chapel on Bergerhöh is a place for quiet reflection, with a fantastic view of Todtnauberg. Residents of Todtnauberg built it in memory of those who fell in the two world wars. The view and remembrance shape the site together, giving the chapel a different focus from the waterfall and suspension bridge.
The wider Todtnau area
Todtnau is part of the wider area. The Todtnau Waterfall is located in the Todtnau mountain region, between the holiday resorts of Todtnauberg and Aftersteg. Todtnau lies in the upper Wiesental Valley between Feldberg and Belchen, in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park and the Black Forest Biosphere Reserve.
Todtnau has hiking, cycling and mountain biking routes of varying difficulty, with views of the Black Forest. This makes it possible to consider the type of activity and its difficulty level as two separate factors. Rustic, cosy mountain huts at StĂĽbenwasen, Gisiboden and Hasenhorn invite you to stop for a bite to eat.
One cultural attraction in the wider destination is the Todtnau Brush Museum. Its permanent exhibition showcases the life and work of Karl Ludwig Nessler; the museum also explores the history of the Todtnau brush industry from 1770 to the present day. This means that, alongside its scenery and routes, Todtnau also offers a glimpse into the region’s industrial history.
