Gersbach combines Baroque history, pastoral farming and trails through the Black Forest landscape. This gives you several specific ways to choose how to spend your time here: explore historic ski jumps, learn more about cattle on a themed trail, or discover cheese experiences and hiking routes.

Pasture, Forest and Trails

The Gersbach district of Schopfheim lies in the “Weidfelder bei Gersbach und an der Wehra” FFH site. A signposted network of hiking trails covering more than 150 kilometres leads through natural mountain pastures and primeval-looking Plenter forests. The panoramic views described include the Rhine Valley, the high mountains of Switzerland and the southern Black Forest. So when you go hiking, the landscape is just as much a focus as the route itself.

One particularly informative route is the Gersbach Cattle Trail: along a three-kilometre panoramic path, twelve themed information boards tell you more about cattle as herd animals. The trail also includes a wisent enclosure with a herd of hardy forest wisents. In Gersbach, you can see forest wisents grazing all year round; how easy they are to spot can vary.

The Gersbach ski jump trails are signposted circular hiking routes with shorter and longer options. They include field and forest paths as well as paved routes suitable for pushchairs. It is worth checking the condition of the trails locally before choosing a route. The different options give you several ways to include the ski jump landscape in a hike, without any single route representing all the trails.

Baroque Ski Jumps and a Long History

Six Baroque-era ski jump and defensive structures were built in the Gersbach district. Their partially preserved remains are of outstanding importance to regional history. In the Scherentann area, a hexagonal Baroque defensive ski jump with a watchtower and signal tower has been reconstructed. Its design and the two functions of the tower give the historic site a tangible character.

The Evangelical Church of Gersbach is also part of the area’s long history: it was first mentioned in writing in 1166. Its historical roots therefore reach far beyond the Baroque-era structures. Anyone interested in the area’s history will find both an early written reference to the church and visible traces of the later defensive structures in Gersbach.

Cheese, Group Activities and the Pasture Festival

ChäsChuchi Gersbach processes only unprocessed milk from local farms, using traditional, artisanal methods. Tours and seminars are available for groups, as well as a cheese and wine culinary experience. These activities combine local milk processing with a culinary perspective. If you would also like to discover Gersbach through its pastoral farming, this offers a different focus from the historic structures and hiking trails.

The annual Pasture Festival takes place on the last Sunday in September. It features many animals and numerous farmers’ market stalls selling regional products. Check the exact festival date before your trip to make sure it fits your stay.

Cycling and Winter Sports

The district has an extensive, partly signposted network of cycle paths through varied Black Forest landscapes. It connects to the 300-kilometre mountain biking network of the Southern Black Forest Nature Park. As conditions on individual routes can change, it is advisable to check the latest trail conditions before setting out.

For winter, a combined skating and classic cross-country skiing trail network shared by Gersbach and the neighbouring spa town of Todtmoos is described, at an altitude of around 1,000 metres. Both skiing styles are available; check before travelling whether there is enough snow and the trails are open. This helps distinguish the seasonal option from the hiking and cycling activities described as available year-round.
