St. Nicholas Minster, the lakeside promenade and the municipal museum offer three different ways to discover Überlingen: Gothic architecture, paths along the lake and local history. Gardens, green spaces and routes add to the options, as do the thermal baths and guided experiences. To plan your visit, choose your focus: culture in the town, time by the water or getting active on a trail.
Lakeshore, Gardens and Paths
Überlingen’s lakeside promenade runs for more than two kilometres along Lake Constance. The roughly six-hectare lakeside park is a legacy of the 2021 garden show. Its naturally landscaped shoreline, open access to the lake and play areas offer various ways to enjoy time by the water.
In the upper town garden, a cast-iron pavilion dating from the 19th century stands on a rocky outcrop, offering panoramic views. The former town fortifications also shape the green spaces: today they form a green belt around Überlingen’s Old Town and have become an urban green corridor and local recreation area.
The approximately four-kilometre Garden Culture Trail passes selected parks, gardens and green spaces where garden culture can be experienced first-hand. Cycling tours offer another way to get moving: they follow the lakeshore with virtually no climbs and pass lidos, parks and viewpoints. There are different options for planning your route, from the lakeshore and landscaped green spaces to views along the cycling routes.
Local History and Special Discoveries
St. Nicholas Minster is Überlingen’s landmark and the largest Gothic church on Lake Constance. The Überlingen Municipal Museum brings the history, culture and art of the town and region to life, from the Stone Age to the 20th century. Its collection includes one of Germany’s largest collections of dollhouses. The museum garden is also home to Jewish gravestones, which are among the oldest in Baden-Württemberg.
The free Zeigmal.App accompanies a walk through Überlingen with short audio stories and historical photographs, offering insights into more than 1,250 years of local history. As the app’s availability may change, it is best to check in advance. A recurring guided tour lasting around 1.5 hours introduces key sights, including the Minster, the historic council chamber and the former trading and granary building, the Greth. For planning purposes, we recommend checking current dates and booking arrangements.
The outdoor escape experience “1643 – Konradin’s Escape” leads through the winding lanes of the historic Old Town, over walls and towers, and along the old town ditches. If this experience fits your plans, check its current availability in advance.
Hiking Trail or Thermal Baths
For a longer hike, the SeeGang premium hiking trail connects Konstanz and Überlingen over a distance of more than 50 kilometres. It is quite different from the approximately four-kilometre Garden Culture Trail, which passes selected urban green spaces. The two trails have different focuses; check local conditions on the SeeGang before setting out.
For a different kind of visit, the Bodensee-Therme Überlingen offers indoor and outdoor pools as well as various saunas. Its sauna garden has direct access to the lake. For current details about the thermal baths’ facilities, it is best to check with the operator.
If you choose Überlingen as your destination, the differences between local history, lakeside paths, green spaces and the thermal baths provide a practical guide for planning your days. You can decide whether you would rather explore the sights, spend time outdoors or plan a visit to the thermal baths, without trying to fit everything into a single itinerary.
