Fruit trees, gentle hills and the natural Rotach valley shape Ailingen’s landscape. Haldenberg and Horach offer panoramic views of the Alps. Other highlights include traditional orchard cultivation, leisure activities and a rich local history. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these different aspects in mind.

Trails and landscape

In Ailingen, trails through fruit trees, gentle hills and the natural Rotach valley invite you to stroll, hike and go walking. Haldenberg and Horach offer panoramic views of the Alps. Outdoor activities and scenic views therefore shape the landscape aspect of a stay.

The Ailingen Panorama Trail passes Höhlerösch, a protected wet meadow. Those interested in protected landscapes while out and about will find a specific point of interest along the trail here.

In addition to panoramic views of the Alps, Horach offers a special vantage point: a hidden viewpoint on a water reservoir overlooks Ailingen and the mountains. Horach is also a drumlin formed by glaciers in the northern hinterland of Lake Constance. It can therefore be understood both through its views and through the formation of the landscape.

Orchards and leisure

The StreuObstGarten near the WeilermĂĽhle recreation area is home to 180 trees and offers plenty of information about traditional orchard cultivation. The StreuObstGarten also includes a recreational area with barbecue spots and a playground. Here, information about fruit growing and a leisure area come together.

Ailingen’s outdoor wave pool has a diving facility and a water slide. This offers a different focus for activities than the trails, viewpoints and orchard-related attractions. When planning, you can therefore decide whether you would rather explore the landscape, learn about traditional orchard cultivation or include the outdoor pool as a destination in its own right.

Architectural history and exhibitions

Haldenberg Chapel is a popular destination on the 479-metre-high Haldenberg. St. John the Baptist Parish Church tells a different architectural story: it was rebuilt in 1959 after the older church, built around 1500, became too small. The two buildings represent different historical points of interest in Ailingen. Carpenter Johann Heinzelmann designed and built the chapel in 1892.

The Old Ailingen Rectory was built in 1710, featuring unusually elaborate and imposing half-timbering. Those interested in historic building methods will find a specific architectural detail here. Ittenhausen Mill, meanwhile, was first mentioned in a document in 1198. This year marks its first documented mention, not its construction date.

The Ittenhausen Museum also combines a local connection with regular exhibitions: the City of Friedrichshafen makes it available to the Society for History and Local Heritage (Gesellschaft für Geschichte und Heimatpflege e. V.) as a museum, and the association regularly uses it for exhibitions. The exhibitions thus add another focus on cultural history alongside the historic buildings and the area’s long history.
