The panoramic views from Mondhalde stretch from the inner Kaiserstuhl to the Vosges and the Black Forest: Bischoffingen combines sweeping vistas with vineyards, local wine traditions and local history. When planning your visit, you can give different emphasis to the landscape, wine and culture; the Vogesenblicktour, regular wine tastings and St. Laurentius Church each reveal a different side of the village.

Vineyards and Viewpoints

Bischoffingen is surrounded by vineyards. Mondhalde, the highest point to the east, offers panoramic views from its lookout across the inner Kaiserstuhl to Breisach, Alsace and the Vosges mountain range, as well as the Black Forest. From the Vogesenblick viewpoint, views extend to Breisach, Alsace and across the Rhine Plain. The two viewpoints offer different perspectives: the panorama from Mondhalde also takes in the inner Kaiserstuhl and the Black Forest, while the view from Vogesenblick includes the Rhine Plain.

The Vogesenblicktour is a short panoramic circular trail through the vineyards. It climbs to the Vogesenblick viewpoint and returns to the starting point through the vines. To travel by train to the Vogesenblicktour, follow the route to Burkheim station; from there, it is about 500 metres on foot to Bischoffinger Winzer eG. Check train connections before you travel.

Local Wine

Guided vineyard tours and wine tastings are regularly offered in Bischoffingen. The main grape varieties include Spätburgunder, also known as Pinot Noir, Grauer Burgunder and Weißer Burgunder. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are also grown in the Kaiserstuhl as a whole. This distinguishes the main varieties grown locally from the broader context of viticulture in the Kaiserstuhl.

Bischoffinger Winzer has marketed its wines jointly since 1924. Since 2014, a multi-course dining tour through Bischoffingen’s wine businesses has been offered on the third weekend in April: on Fridays and Saturdays, followed by an open Sunday. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates for the relevant year. Seasonally, wines from Bischoffinger Winzer are served with small delicacies and Kaiserstuhl vintners’ tapas on the sun terrace directly in front of its wine shop.

Local History and Regional Context

The Protestant St. Laurentius Church is known for its late Gothic frescoes. Archaeological finds in Bischoffingen also date back a long way: they include artefacts from the Alemannic and Roman periods, as well as the Neolithic. Alongside wine and landscape, different historical periods therefore offer another theme to explore during a visit to the village.

The wider destination of Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl offers further wine-growing and cultural attractions. The 3.6-kilometre Achkarrer Schlossbergpfad trail runs through the “Schlossberg” vineyard site. Together, the trail and the Kaiserstuhl Wine Museum in the centre of Achkarren provide insights into the soil, climate, grape varieties and history of viticulture in the Kaiserstuhl. In Burkheim, the historic, heritage-protected Mittelstädtle quarter includes burgher and half-timbered houses, the town hall and the town gate.
