The Rank Mill opens to visitors once a month, with no advance booking required. There, you can watch the mill in operation and learn about the restoration of the historic building. If the mill is part of your trip, the monthly opening day gives you a concrete starting point for choosing your travel dates. A carriage ride around St. Märgen passes the Rank Mill; check with the operator before your trip to see whether the ride is available.
Hiking: Destination and Timeframe
St. Märgen has 85 kilometers of hiking trails, including an 11-kilometer circular trail to the Zweribach waterfalls. Another loop leads through the Zweribach Bannwald forest near St. Märgen: it is 12 kilometers long and takes about four hours. This gives you different points of reference: one route is defined by its waterfall destination, while on the other you can consider the distance and approximate duration together. The hiking trail network may change seasonally; check conditions before setting out.
Winter Trails and Cross-Country Ski Trails
For cross-country skiing, St. Märgen has 15 kilometers of trails connecting to the Thurner trail; the routes are 8 to 15 kilometers long. Winter hiking is a separate alternative: there are around 12 kilometers of winter hiking trails in total, including an 8-kilometer panoramic trail to Thurner. So the routes differ not only in length but also in the type of activity: cross-country skiing on groomed trails or winter hiking, with the panoramic trail as a specific destination. Snow conditions, trail maintenance and clearance can affect conditions; check them before your tour.
Monastic Culture and Museum
The monastery church and courtyard are original landmarks of the Marian pilgrimage site of St. Märgen. The Church of the Assumption of Mary houses a Romanesque devotional image and Rococo carvings. The St. Märgen Monastery Museum focuses on the history of clockmaking in the Black Forest, the global clock trade and the history of the monastery. The site therefore highlights both its religious heritage and the history of clockmaking and trade. The museum regularly offers guided tours of the permanent exhibition on Sundays at 11 a.m.; check for holiday exceptions before visiting. Children can explore the museum with a quiz.
The Roßfest as a Reason to Travel
The Roßfest in St. Märgen takes place every three years. Its recurring program includes judging Black Forest Fuchs horses, demonstrations, traditional crafts and a historic parade. The parade features Black Forest cold-blooded horses, historic wagons, traditional costume bands and associations. If you would like to travel for the Roßfest, check the date of the next event and its specific program: the schedule may vary from one edition to another. Checking the date will help you coordinate your visit to the festival with your accommodation plans.
