Forest, Elevation and Rock
Holzschlag lies at an elevation of 816 metres amid red sandstone and granite. Dense forests surround the village. The elevation, rock and forest give the landscape a distinct character; the local routes offer different ways to enjoy a stay immersed in nature and outdoor activities.
Two Circular Trails with Different Foci
The Via Apis Bee Nature Trail is an approximately two-kilometre-long panoramic circular trail suitable for pushchairs, starting at the Holzschlag hiking car park. Along the themed trail are 15 information panels. An observation beehive adds to the bee theme; there is a playground at the starting point. Facilities also include an information centre and parking. Via Apis thus combines a circular trail with engaging stops and clearly identified facilities.
Circular Trail No. 2 Holzschlag–Glashütte starts at Holzschlag village square and follows the Bee Nature Trail, as well as the Vorderbergweg, Kohlweg and Bruggenweg paths, to Glaserbuck Hut. This is a basic shelter hut. Via Apis is approximately two kilometres long and suitable for pushchairs; Circular Trail No. 2 starts at the village square and follows the Vorderbergweg, Kohlweg and Bruggenweg paths to the basic shelter hut, Glaserbuck Hut.
Cycle Route, Bus and Wutach Gorge
A cycling route is also described: the Bähnle Cycle Path follows the historic railway line to Holzschlag. It then runs above Gündelwangen, past horse pastures, and offers a beautiful view of the Wutach Gorge. This route description therefore differs from the local circular trails, with its railway line, horse pastures and viewpoints.
Circular Trail No. 3 Holzschlag–Gündelwangen is accessible from Neustadt or Bonndorf by bus route 7258. The leaflet was updated on 13 June 2018. Check the current timetable before setting off. There is also an access point to the Wutach Gorge from the motorhome parking area at Holzschlag village square.
GlashĂĽtte and Regional Culture
The small hamlet of Glashütte once belonged to Holzschlag and is documented as far back as 1296. The hamlet’s name comes from a glassworks that operated there.
In the wider destination of Bonndorf in the Black Forest, the Bonndorf Castle Fools’ Rooms display more than 400 faithfully reproduced miniature carnival figures made by Theo Hany himself. The castle vault also houses more than 300 original masks, or larvae, from across the region’s carnival tradition. The collections offer different points of interest: miniature figures here, masks and larvae there. Check current opening hours before visiting. In the wider destination of Bonndorf in the Black Forest, Schwarzwaldimkerei & Brennerei Herb produces honey specialities, fruit brandies, honey schnapps and liqueurs from regional ingredients; the farm shop’s range includes honey, bee and spirits products.
The Wutach Gorge Natura 2000 site is also part of the wider destination of Bonndorf in the Black Forest: it covers 3,543 hectares, 24 percent of which lies within the municipality of Bonndorf. The site includes the Wutach Gorge and Vogtsberg nature reserves.
