Opfingen offers two distinct highlights: themed trails with clearly specified lengths and the Opfingen quarry lake, with opportunities for swimming, cycling and walking. The trails start in the village centre; by the lake, there is a recreational area to the south and a protected natural area to the north. When planning your visit, it is therefore worth considering both the distance you want to cover and the focus of your visit.
Themed trails of varying lengths
Opfingen’s themed trails start in the village centre. The 1.5 km wine trail runs through the vineyards and features 20 information boards. The Panorama Trail is 4.1 km long, while the Lizard Trail is 6.9 km. These distances help you compare the routes: the wine trail is considerably shorter than the other two.
The themed trails offer views of the Black Forest, Breisgau, Markgräflerland, Kaiserstuhl and the Vosges. The wine trail culminates at an observation tower. The trails can also be linked to the Burgunderpfad and other regional hiking trails. Check the local signposting before setting off.
Opfingen quarry lake: recreation and nature areas
Swimming, cycling and walking are all possible at Opfingen quarry lake. The southern recreational area has a beach volleyball court, slackline posts and a large meadow. The northern section is a protected natural area; you can observe wildlife from a viewing platform.
Facilities and access rules may change. Before your visit, check the City of Freiburg’s website for the latest information about the lake.
Getting to Opfingen Lake
Opfingen Lake can be reached on Freiburg bus routes 32 and 33, getting off at the Opfinger See stop. For cycling there, the city recommends the well-signposted cycle route network. Check the latest information with the local transport authority before travelling.
Freiburg im Breisgau: culture and city history
In the wider destination of Freiburg im Breisgau, the Documentation Centre on National Socialism Freiburg presents local history from 1918 to the present across three floors. Interactive exhibitions, a former air-raid shelter and biographies of contemporary witnesses offer insights into Freiburg’s engagement with the Nazi era.
Freiburg’s Old Town also brings urban history to life in tangible ways: the Freiburg Bächle are water channels that flow through many of the Old Town’s lanes. The Upper Old Town, with its Gewerbekanal, Gerberau, Fischerau and Insel, invites you to explore its cobbled streets.
The west tower of Freiburg Minster is 116 metres high. The 750-year-old Hosanna weighs three tonnes and is one of Germany’s oldest Angelus bells. The extensive art and cultural history collection at the Augustiner Museum spans the Middle Ages to the Baroque period.
Within the city of Freiburg, Seepark has a bathing lake, restaurants, a swimming pool, playgrounds and a mini-golf course. Visitors can pedal a boat on the lake; availability may depend on the weather and operating conditions. Check operating details in advance.
