Saguramo brings together literary history, forest landscapes and Georgian wine. For a stay, you can explore culture, nature and wine tasting as distinct highlights: a writers’ museum, a wooded protected landscape and Qvevri wine culture all come together here.

Literature and Culture in Saguramo

The Ilia Chavchavadze State Museum is housed in the writer’s former eleven-room mansion. It preserves manuscripts, newspaper issues, works of art, photographs, furniture and other historical objects. The museum also hosts poetry evenings and cultural festivals. The former residence, collections and events offer three different ways to explore its cultural highlights.

Forest Landscapes and Routes

The Saguramo Reserve is a wooded protected landscape in the Saguramo Range and part of Tbilisi National Park. Wildlife found there includes Caucasian red deer, bears, wolves and jackals, as well as numerous bird species.

Tbilisi National Park has three cycling routes rated easy, moderate and difficult. There is also a hiking route and the Zedazeni–Didveli–Mamkoda horse-riding trail. Cycling routes are therefore available at three difficulty levels, while hiking and horse riding are offered as separate route types. Check trail conditions and current access before setting out. The park also lists two picnic areas, two campsites and designated fire pits. Availability may vary seasonally; confirm in advance if picnicking or camping is an essential part of your plans.

Zedazeni: Monastery and Hiking Trail

About seven kilometres from the village of Saguramo, Zedazeni Monastery sits on the Saguramo Ridge at an elevation of 1,250 metres. The monastery was founded in the sixth century by Ioane, one of the Assyrian Fathers, at the site of a former pagan idol. The surviving three-nave basilica, however, dates from the late eighth century; the monastery is also home to the stone sarcophagus of Ioane Zedazneli. A hiking trail on the Saguramo Ridge passes the Zedazeni Church. The church is dated to the seventh or eighth century, and the trail offers views of the landscape. Different features can help guide your choice of activity: you can compare the difficulty levels of the cycling routes, while the Saguramo Ridge hiking trail passes a church and offers scenic views.

Wine and Georgian Cuisine

Toreli Winery in Saguramo produces natural Georgian wine using the traditional Qvevri method. Visitors are welcome to enjoy wine tastings with traditional Georgian cuisine; wine is also available for purchase. Visitor arrangements and offerings may change; confirm them in advance.
