Ureki lies on the Black Sea and is defined by its coastline of magnetic sand. The 1.5-kilometer stretch of coast provides a clear starting point for deciding whether the town suits your travel plans. The sand produces a naturally occurring, low-intensity magnetic field, contains magnetite, titanomagnetite, monazite and zircon, and retains heat for a long time. This makes a visit to the beach a chance to experience a distinctive geological feature.

Coast and landscape

Ureki lies in the southwestern Colchis Lowland, between the Black Sea, nearby mountains and the Supsa and Natane rivers. The climate is humid subtropical. The sea, lowland, rivers and nearby mountains form the town’s geographical setting. Ureki’s sea air is considered highly ionized; the beach, seawater and sea air are also associated with therapeutic effects. This therapeutic classification is wellness-related and is not medical advice.

Season and beach

The shallow water is considered suitable for children to swim in. The summer season given for Ureki runs from June to mid-September, providing a timeframe for planning your trip. For conditions in 2024, the beach width is given as 45 to 50 meters. A 550-meter-long concrete pedestrian path has been built along the beach. Its condition may change, so check before visiting. The path is just over one-third of the coastline’s length.

Sanatorium and nearby destinations

The Kolkhida Sanatorium in Ureki offers balneological and spa treatments under medical supervision, massages, therapeutic and treatment baths, and sand baths. If these treatments are important to your trip, confirm what is currently available in advance. The Kolkhida building has ramps for visitors with mobility impairments. Contact the facility directly to confirm whether the specific access arrangements meet your needs.

Tsvermagala Park is nearby, between Ureki and Shekvetili. The site covers four hectares, spans two levels and contains a mandarin orchard. The park is therefore a separate destination in the area, with a location and layout that clearly distinguish it from the coastline.

Broader nature experiences and travel

Kolkheti National Park is a broader natural area that also includes part of Guria. Boat tours are offered near Poti; the park also offers birdwatching, eco-educational tours and sport fishing in wetlands and Colchian forests. The difference is one of scale: Tsvermagala Park is specifically located between Ureki and Shekvetili, while the national park encompasses a variety of landscapes and activities.

Georgian Railway operates train services between Tbilisi and Ureki. Timetables and availability may change; check current connections before your trip. This lets you treat getting there as a separate planning point alongside the seasonal beach guidance and the different nature destinations.
