Those looking to discover Khulo through its culture and landscape will find several distinct starting points: the Khulo Local Lore Museum showcases the region’s ethnography and everyday life; Khulo Tourist Route I starts in Khulo and leads to Kedlebi. There is also the cable car to Tago and the Khulo–Tago–Mount-Argineti Route, which has a different recommended season. When looking for a hotel in Khulo, it is therefore worth considering your planned visits and the conditions for each together—not every route follows the same time frame.

Khulo Local Lore Museum

The Khulo Local Lore Museum was founded in 1983. Its exhibits include tools from the 19th and 20th centuries, local crafts and embroidery. The collections are grouped into ethnography, sculpture, archaeology and numismatics; the museum also offers insights into the region’s everyday culture. It organizes educational courses and discussions about cultural heritage. Admission is free. Check before your visit whether this policy is still in effect.

Hiking routes with different destinations

Khulo Tourist Route I begins with a visit to the Ethnographic Museum and ends in Kedlebi. It runs at elevations between 883 and 1,592 metres above sea level and is recommended year-round; local conditions may nevertheless affect access. One section of the route leads to Uchkho Bridge and is suitable only for walking. The nearby single-span bridge dates back to the 12th century. On the Khulo–Kedlebi route, a waterfall lies about one kilometre beyond Kedlebi Skiing Base.

The Khulo–Tago–Mount-Argineti Route has a different recommended season and starts in the centre of Khulo. It is recommended only from late spring to early autumn; tourist movement along this route is restricted in winter. Check local conditions when planning your hike. The year-round recommendation for Route I does not apply to the route to Mount Argineti.

Cable car to Tago

The Khulo–Tago cable car is a key link between Khulo and Tago for the local population. The ride to Tago takes eight minutes, and the cable car is 1,700 metres long. Its short journey and mountain views give it a distinctive character among the options available from Khulo. Check its current operating status before planning your trip. Tago can also be reached by road; as road conditions can change, check them before setting off.

Nature and history of the municipality

The municipal area also offers a natural setting distinct from the cultural attractions in town. Green Lake lies in Khulo Municipality at 2,058 metres above sea level. The Goderdzi Fossil Forest is also in the municipality: the fossilized forest covers 365 hectares and has the status of a natural monument. These places have a different character from a museum visit or a hike starting in Khulo.

The municipality’s history includes a settlement associated with the role of a trading post that was once called Khula—“house of trade.” Together with the collections at the Khulo Local Lore Museum, this historical connection offers another way to explore regional culture. When planning your trip, you can weigh up a museum visit, hiking trails, a cable car ride and natural attractions in the municipal area, while keeping in mind the different seasonal and access conditions for each.
