Nature and Visitor Rules

The Pitsunda-Miusera State Nature Reserve encompasses oak forests, clearings, ravines, rocky scree slopes, and sandy beaches. Its protected area covers 3,770 hectares, including just under 3,553 hectares of forest. More than 800 plant species are found in the area. The reserve also protects 24 rare and endangered plant species listed in the Red Book.

The Pitsunda pine forest is a relic of the ancient Crimean-Caucasian flora. It covers 200 hectares and stretches for seven kilometers along the Black Sea coast. Lake Inkiti lies on Cape Pitsunda and provides another geographical reference point.

To visit the nature reserve, you must arrange a pass in advance and follow the route agreed with the administration. Check the current access procedures before your visit. This lets you take this requirement into account when planning your trip, before arranging a stay in the protected area.

Traces of Ancient Pitiunt

Pizunda developed on the site of the ancient city of Pitiunt, founded by Greek merchants from Miletus. Archaeologists have found the remains of seven Christian churches in Pizunda. The Pitsunda-Miusera Nature Reserve also contains archaeological remains of an ancient settlement and a temple dating from the 1st to the 4th century AD.

The Great Pitiunt complex preserves temple buildings from different periods and architectural styles. The oldest structure identified there is considered to be the episcopal see of Stratophilus; the bishop took part in the Council of Nicaea in 325. The Patriarchal Cathedral of Pizunda was built in the late 10th or early 11th century on the ruins of an older cathedral. The evidence mentioned therefore spans the archaeological traces of the 1st to the 4th century and the considerably later construction of the cathedral.

Leisure Options and Current Planning

A dolphinarium opened in Pizunda in 2016, with shows featuring dolphins and seals. Programs and operations may change; check whether performances are being offered before your visit. This keeps the opening year as a historical reference point while allowing you to plan around what is actually available now.

A modern water park opened on the grounds of the Kurort Pitsunda as a family recreation facility. Its availability may change, so check the current status before your trip. The Kurort Pitsunda complex also offers excursions in Abkhazia. This offer may change too; ask in advance which excursions are available.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Pizunda, you can weigh the different priorities against one another: nature enthusiasts should treat the reserve’s pass and route rules as a specific planning consideration; for leisure facilities, the current operating status and availability matter. Those mainly interested in architectural and settlement history will find several clearly distinguishable periods.
