More than 800 plant species are found in the Pitsunda–Myussera Nature Reserve. The medieval Ambara Church is located in Miusera. Nature and architectural history thus offer different points of interest for a trip.

Nature in the Pitsunda–Myussera Nature Reserve

The Pitsunda–Myussera Nature Reserve is considered Abkhazia’s only state-protected area in the coastal zone. Its landscape features include relict stands of Pitsunda pine and Colchian boxwood, mountain oak forest, gorges, and sandy beaches. More than 800 plant species are found in the reserve; 24 of them are rare or endangered and listed in the Red Book. Visitors may encounter Red Book plants, mosses, and endemic species there; birdsong is also part of the natural experience.

The unified reserve was established in 1966 and comprises three areas, including the Myussera dacha area. Visitors need a permit to enter; a pass can be arranged through the website. Check the procedure before your trip. Within the protected area, you must stay on the route agreed with the administration. The permit and route rule concern two different parts of preparation: the pass relates to entry, while the agreement concerns the route within the area.

Ambara Church in Miusera

Researchers date the medieval Ambara Church to a broad period from the 10th to the 13th century. Its south façade has a distinctive triple-arched opening in the form of a canopy-like gable. The façade and stone vaults in the main sanctuary and side chapels have been preserved. The opening describes an exterior feature of the building; the vaults are among the surviving interior structures. Thus, a broad date range and specific architectural features serve as different points of reference.

The areas of focus differ considerably when planning a trip: in the reserve, a permit and an agreed route are part of the visit. At the Ambara Church, dating and architectural forms take centre stage. If you are weighing nature observation against medieval architecture, take into account both the protected area’s visitor rules and your interest in architectural history.

More architectural history

Construction of State Dacha No. 27 began in 1931 and was completed in 1936. In contrast to the broad dating of the Ambara Church, this building has two fixed year markers for its start and completion, five years apart. The two building histories thus offer different time scales for historical context.

Where to stay in Miusera

One specific accommodation option is the Mussera Pension in Miusera. Its beach is sandy with fine pebbles and is 50 metres from the building. Horse riding is one of the leisure activities associated with the Mussera Pension. As leisure activities can change, check before your trip whether horse riding is currently available. The beach surface and the riding option are different aspects to consider when choosing your accommodation.
