Baglani is one of the settlements of Adzyubzha. Adzyubzha and the Kodori are key to understanding the geography; archaeological finds from Baglani and the Baglan tract offer different historical perspectives. Other topics can be explored in the broader context of Abkhazia.
Landscape and Historical Areas
Adzyubzha lies in the Black Sea lowland on the left bank of the Kodori. South of Adzyubzha, the river flows into the Black Sea. Historically, the episcopal territory of Dranda extended between the Kodori and Anakopia. The river landscape and the history of the church’s territory thus offer two different perspectives on the region.
Church and Archaeological Traces
The 13th-century Marmalabaa Church stands in Adzyubzha. Rich cremation burials dating from the Early Hellenistic period have been documented in the Baglan tract near Adzyubzha. An iron spearhead damaged by fire was found in the Baghlani cemetery. Together, these traces offer different perspectives: church architecture, burial finds, and a single archaeological object.
Cave and Thermal Waters
Abrskila Cave is a destination in the wider travel area. Its excursion route is 800 metres long and lies within a total explored section of 2 kilometres. The cave contains stalactites and stalagmites. The underground stream is about 14°C and usually 20 to 50 centimetres deep; in spring, its water can rise to the hip level of an adult. Seasonal water levels are therefore also worth considering alongside the route length. Route lengths and visitor regulations may change; check the latest information before visiting.
The Kyndyg thermal complex offers outdoor pools with different water temperatures, hot showers, and mud baths. This is a different focus from a cave visit. As visitor facilities may change, check which amenities are currently available before travelling.
More Destinations in Abkhazia
In the wider travel destination of Abkhazia, the New Athos Cave offers another perspective on caves: the footpath is 1.4 kilometres long and passes viewpoints; all chambers feature artistic lighting and sound. The cave contains hundreds of thousands of crystal formations of more than 100 different types, with varied shapes and colours. At New Athos, the path, viewpoints, light, and sound are the main features; at Abrskila, the focus is on the excursion length and seasonal water levels.
The construction history of the New Athos Monastery can also be placed in chronological context. It was built in several phases between 1877 and 1911 and consists of two parts. The upper complex has a quadrangular layout, was built between 1884 and 1896, and contains five churches.
Church buildings from different periods and in different styles have been preserved in the Pitsunda area. Pitsunda Cathedral was built in the late 10th or early 11th century on the ruins of an older cathedral. The old Pitsunda Lighthouse is no longer in operation and is considered a local landmark of Abkhazia.
