A 17-hectare botanical park, markets, a Romanesque cathedral and water activities give Port-Gentil a range of travel highlights. To plan your trip, start by deciding whether nature, urban culture or excursions in the bay will be your main focus.
Botanical diversity at the Hôtel du Parc gardens
The botanical park at the Hôtel du Parc offers a glimpse of equatorial flora. It is home to plants and flowers endemic to Gabon, as well as a nursery and an organic vegetable garden. A large palm collection adds to the diversity, featuring more than 300 species from around the world. This means Gabonese endemic plants grow alongside palm species from various parts of the world.
The park also offers opportunities for walks and exercise: visitors can stroll alongside lakes and follow a signposted fitness trail. Visits can be arranged for schools and associations; interested visitors can ask the hotel about the farm or zoo. It is best to check directly with the operator in advance about the visit options you are interested in.
The cathedral, garden and markets
Discover Cathédrale Saint-Louis through its architecture and simple interior. Its Romanesque design is adapted to the local climate and features numerous openings. Inside, wood and stone create a simple impression, and a statue of Saint Louis by Real Del Sarte stands at the entrance. The architecture and furnishings create distinct focal points: the many openings characterize the building, while the wood, stone and statue define the interior.
The garden around the cathedral is a pleasant place to stroll and spend time. Grand Village Market and de la Balise Market offer a different perspective on the city. Both provide a lively glimpse into the everyday life of Port-Gentil’s residents.
Nearby, at Cap Lopez, stands a metal lighthouse built in 1911 in Gustave Eiffel’s workshops. It is no longer in operation but continues to serve as a navigational landmark. Its history and its current role as a navigation marker should therefore be clearly distinguished: the lighthouse is a historic structure, not an active lighthouse.
The beach and water activities
Boat trips to watch humpback whales and dolphins are organized in the waters around Port-Gentil; orcas are seen less often. Whale-watching operators are available in Port-Gentil. According to WCS, whale watching remains a small industry in Gabon. Those interested in this activity will find it offers a distinct focus alongside the city’s cultural attractions.
Several organizations offer deep-sea fishing trips from Port-Gentil. Catch may include tarpon, red snapper or barracuda, among other species. Sailing championships are also held in Port-Gentil Bay. If you want to plan your trip around a particular championship, check the event dates in advance.
For a different kind of stay, Sogara Beach is a good place to swim and relax. Boat trips, fishing and the beach offer a range of activities along the coast and in the surrounding waters; you can decide which ones will shape your stay as you plan your trip.
Getting there and planning your stay
Port-Gentil is reached from Libreville mainly by plane or boat. Check the relevant connections and departure times when planning your journey. Be sure to separately confirm Hôtel du Parc visit options and the dates of any sailing championship in advance.
