Poubara: Beach and Waterfall Trail

The Poubara site in the Mpassa department includes a beach. There is also a roughly 30-minute walk through the forest to the Poubara Falls; along the way, you have to cross a suspension bridge. This puts two different aspects of nature in focus: the beach as a feature of the site, and the trail to the waterfalls. This distinction is useful when planning your trip if you are considering whether a specific walking route or another aspect of the landscape should be the main focus. This means Poubara can be described through more than one point of interest: the forest, bridge crossing, and waterfalls define the walk, while the beach adds another feature to the site.

Planning the Walk

Two details are key for planning your day: the walk to the Poubara Falls takes about 30 minutes, and you have to cross a suspension bridge. You can allow for the approximate duration of the walk as a separate activity. At the same time, the bridge shapes the route, so choosing this natural attraction also means choosing the route described. If you are considering Poubara as an excursion, you can take into account not just the destination but also the route through the forest.

The Chalet at Poubara

A report dated July 8, 2024, states that a chalet was built at the Poubara site and described as ready for use at its inauguration. At the time of the inauguration, it was intended as a place where visitors could drink, eat, and stay overnight. If you plan to have a meal or stay there during your visit, check availability in advance.

Landscapes in the wider Haut-Ogooue destination

Within the wider Haut-Ogooue destination, Parc National des Plateaux Batéké is in Haut-Ogooué province, in Gabon’s far southeast on the border between Congo and Gabon. Its rolling plateaus and hills are intersected by valleys and seasonal streams; elevations range from 350 to 930 m. The vegetation forms a mosaic of grass and shrub savannas and humid gallery forests with various tree species. The plateaus, valleys, savannas, and gallery forests therefore provide another landscape setting within the wider destination, alongside the forest walk and beach at Poubara.

Visiting Parc de la Lékédi

Parc de la Lékédi is also part of the wider Haut-Ogooue destination. Approaching mandrills takes place in groups of no more than five people and can be physically demanding. For safety reasons, this visit is prohibited for children under twelve; wearing a mask is mandatory near mandrills and other primates. From Moanda, the route follows the road toward Bakoumba and then a 1 km track to the park entrance. If you plan this visit, check local road conditions and the current requirements for approaching mandrills in advance. Group size, the age limit, the mask requirement, and possible physical exertion are practical factors to consider when planning this visit.
