Montsapey can be explored through two interests: hiking trails in the mountain landscape and buildings that reveal the history of local culture and land use. When planning your trip, consider whether you prefer a longer hike, a themed walk, or architecture and sacred art. The trails and sites offer different highlights.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

The Sentier des Alpages connects with the Tour de la Lauzière and is a long but easy balcony trail. Along the way, it passes alpine lakes. The length and difficulty are useful points to consider when planning; trail routes can change. So check current trail conditions before setting out.

At Lac de Clartan, below the ridges of the Lauzière, you may spot marmots and chamois if you are patient and quiet. Sightings are not guaranteed. The lake offers another way to discover the landscape, with a focus on careful wildlife observation.

The Sentier de montée à Montsapey connects Randens with Montsapey and leads up to the Chapelle de Montsapey. The route offers views of the Lauzière, Belledonne and the Bauges. The hike to Grand Arc has a different scenic focus: it starts in Tioulévé or at the Pont des Rouelles and offers a panorama across the entire Alpine massif. Seasonal road or trail conditions may affect the starting points, and visibility also depends on the weather. Take both into account when planning.

For a walk, the Sentier Nature et Souvenir is an alternative. This accessible trail tells the story of the hard lives once led by the inhabitants of Montsapey. It passes through meadows and beech forest before rejoining the descent of the Circuit du Lac Noir towards Tioulévé. Here, landscape and theme go hand in hand: the trail combines views of the surroundings with an exploration of local life in the past.

Other trails also have their own themes. The Circuit du Moulin introduces different ways of harnessing water for energy and leads to a mill that also housed a sawmill. The Sentier du Trou du Loup follows old paths towards Randens and Bonvillaret and passes the Rocher fendu, a natural rock fissure. It also explores aspects of forestry—felling and skidding timber—and predator control using a wolf trap.

Chapels, Church and Mountain Architecture

The church of Saint-Barthélemy features numerous polychrome wooden statues created by the Gilardi brothers. There are also trompe-l’œil murals on a blue background, created by P. Moretti in 1891. The church brings together two distinct forms of sacred art: painted walls and brightly coloured wooden figures.

The Chapelle de l’Immaculée Conception was built between 1897 and 1900 on a rocky outcrop. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views across the Combe de Savoie. Its construction date and setting make it a destination in its own right for travellers who want to include Montsapey’s chapels as well as its hiking trails.

The Chalet du Tour offers another glimpse of local architecture. The building stands at an altitude of 1,434 metres, south of the Lauzière massif. Formerly a mountain farm, it was used to make and store cow’s tomme and goat’s cheese. It is also considered an authentic example of mountain architecture in the Maurienne Valley, where agricultural use and regional building style come together.

Montsapey’s visitor programme also includes baking bread in the communal oven. If you would like to plan this activity, check the current dates before your trip.

If you are looking for a holiday rental for your stay in Montsapey, start by considering your main interest: longer mountain hikes, themed walks or cultural sites. Check seasonal trail conditions for specific routes and the current dates for bread baking.
