Chamoux-sur-Gelon combines a suggested walk through the centre with architectural and landscape details from different areas. The Église Saint-Martin and the Château de Chamoux give the visit a historical focus; near the upper hamlets, the Nant de Montendry gorge offers a contrasting landscape. There is also a cultural heritage route between Chamoux-sur-Gelon and Valgelon-La Rochette. For your planning, it helps to consider the village centre, architectural history and broader routes as separate themes.

A walk through the village centre

The Balade à Chamoux is a suggested walk through the centre of Chamoux, with seven stops. It provides a specific walking route for exploring the village centre. If you are arriving by car, it is recommended that you park near the church in the centre of the village, between the old and new Bourg, for this walk. Local parking conditions may change; check them on site.

The Église Saint-Martin is a Baroque church whose construction Jacques Chiesaz began in 1696 and completed in 1699. The bell tower tells a different architectural story: it is Romanesque, except for the top floor, which dates from the 18th century. The church and tower therefore have two distinct architectural histories, rather than belonging to a single construction phase.

The figures inside the church also have their own positions: Saint Martin, dressed as a bishop, is depicted in the centre, and François de Sales on the right. Along with the building’s history, these figures offer another specific point of interest at the Église Saint-Martin.

The château and local history

The Château de Chamoux has been partially listed as a Monument historique since 19 July 1977. It is privately owned, but its façades can be viewed on a walk through the village. So include the Château as an exterior viewpoint on your village walk.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Allamand family made pasta from flour.

Comparing landscapes and routes

Near the upper hamlets, the Nant de Montendry forms a gorge between two mountains. This landscape is quite different from the buildings in the centre. It helps you choose between focusing on village history and taking in the landscape around the upper hamlets.

The Circuit patrimonial du Val Gelon covers a different area from the Balade à Chamoux: it is 26 kilometres long and follows lightly trafficked roads between Valgelon-La Rochette and Chamoux-sur-Gelon. The two routes are not the same: the Balade is described as a walk through the centre, while the Circuit connects the two named places. Check route conditions before setting out.

West of Chamoux, along the D25, is the Atterrissage Chamoux-sur-Gelon, a take-off and landing site for air sports. If you plan to include this site in your itinerary, check the information for your visit date in advance.
