Albens offers two distinct focal points for planning a trip: a marked walking trail through the marsh and a history stretching from Neolithic settlement to the Church of Saint-Alban. The Sentier des marais has a clearly defined timeframe, while archaeological traces and the church’s architectural history offer a different perspective. When choosing your stay, you can weigh up whether to focus on a clearly defined route or on historical themes.

A walk with clear details

The Sentier des marais is a marked walking trail 1.5 km long and takes about an hour. It is flat, accessible to everyone, and designated a “Promenade confort” (comfortable walk). The route follows compacted gravel paths or wooden boardwalks. Facilities include a pond, seating, exercise equipment, and information panels. Its approximately one-hour duration can be factored into your itinerary; seating makes it possible to take breaks. Exercise equipment adds another way to be active alongside walking, while the information panels provide explanatory content.

The walk through the Marais d'Albens starts at the Albens cemetery car park.

The trail and wet woodland as nature themes

Another perspective on nature is offered by the ForĂŞt domaniale de La Deysse: the wet woodland covers about 28 hectares. When comparing it with the Sentier des marais, different measures come to the fore: the trail is 1.5 km long and takes about an hour, while the forest is described by its area and wet woodland character. This makes it possible to view a single route with a defined duration and a forest area described by its size as distinct nature themes.

Archaeology and traces of the past

The Espace Patrimoine d'Albens is a small museum located in the tourist office. Most of the Roman remains from Albens can be seen there; the Espace Patrimoine also houses an archaeological collection. A train station and car parks are nearby. If you include a visit to the museum in your plans, these nearby facilities can help with orientation.

The Albens area was settled in Neolithic times, around 3000 BC. The Chapelle Rosset is the only surviving relic associated with the former Church of Saint-Alban. The Colonne des curés, by contrast, is a Gallo-Roman relic at the former site of the church. These are distinct historical connections: a surviving relic of the former church and a Gallo-Roman relic at its former site.

The Church of Saint-Alban

The Church of Saint-Alban was blessed on 8 December 1869. The architect Fivel and the building contractor Blondin of Aix-les-Bains were commissioned to construct it; it has three naves and six bays. Along with the exact date, these details also offer insight into the building’s layout. A nave is a lengthwise section of a church interior, while a bay is a distinct structural unit. The history of the Church of Saint-Alban can therefore be explored both chronologically and through its architecture.
