Bron offers several distinct ways to experience culture and nature: Fort de Bron represents the history of fortifications and aviation, while Église Saint-Denis is an example of Romanesque architecture. Parc du Vinatier is a different kind of park from the expansive Parc de Parilly, which extends across Bron and Vénissieux. When choosing a hotel in Bron, you can first consider whether cultural sites, sports and nature activities, or a mix of these are likely to shape your stay.

Fort de Bron: The History of Fortifications and Aviation

The Musée du Fort presents the history of the Séré de Rivières fortifications, Lyon’s defense system and Fort de Bron. The subject also includes everyday life in military buildings. This brings together the development of a larger defense system and the history of a specific fort. Construction of Fort de Bron lasted from early 1875 to late 1877; by the end of this construction phase, it was practically complete, apart from later works. The fort is also a starting point for hikes.

The Aéromusée de Bron, housed in two rooms of the fort, offers a distinct perspective on aviation history. On display are photographs documenting the history of Bron airfield, as well as artworks, medallions, busts and rare engravings. Aircraft parts, mannequins, badge boards, cameras and measuring instruments round out the collection. A reconstruction of the cockpit of a British bomber from the Second World War adds a particular highlight. The subjects range from the history of the airfield to specific aviation objects.

Architecture and Cultural Program

Église Saint-Denis has stood at Place Curial since the Middle Ages. The present-day church has a Romanesque portal and a Romanesque apse. Between them is the nave, flanked by two aisles. Architecture enthusiasts can explore several parts of the church individually rather than focusing on just one detail. Concerts are regularly held in the church, particularly for Fête de la Musique. Dates may vary, so check the current program before attending a concert.

Ferme du Vinatier offers another cultural focus, with exhibitions, concerts, conference debates and gatherings on its program. Events change seasonally. Checking the relevant dates is especially useful if you would like to plan your stay around a particular cultural event.

Two Parks, Different Attractions

Parc du Vinatier has a fallow deer enclosure, farm animals, an orienteering board and a fitness trail. Its opening hours follow those of Ferme du Vinatier: the park is open Tuesday to Friday from 2 to 5 p.m., as well as on evenings or weekends when cultural service events are taking place. Access is on foot only through the main entrance at 95 Boulevard Pinel. Vehicles are permitted inside the hospital only with special authorization. Opening hours and access arrangements may change; check the latest information before your visit. The park’s facilities may also change over time.

At 159 hectares, Parc de Parilly is considerably larger and is classified as an Espace Naturel Sensible. It extends across Bron and Vénissieux and is used for recreation and sport. Its facilities include a permanent orienteering course with 70 control points and a total of 15 kilometers of cycling paths. This park therefore offers specific opportunities for orienteering and cycling, while Parc du Vinatier has different features, such as its fallow deer enclosure and fitness trail. Parc de Parilly’s facilities may change.
