Saint-Médard-en-Forez combines walks through the countryside with a rich local history. The Sentier des moulins leads to the remains of former mills and offers views of neighboring communities. The Sentier paysagé provides insights into trees and the landscape. Other sights include the Château de la Ferrière, the priory and numerous crosses, which you can discover on a walk. When planning a stay, you can choose between exploring the countryside and visiting historic buildings.

Two trails, different highlights

The Sentier des moulins leads to the remains of former mills and offers views of neighboring communities. The Sentier paysagé takes a different approach: twelve information panels about trees and three landscape tables provide insights into the local landscape. The trails therefore offer different kinds of discoveries: one focuses on mill remains and views, the other on information about trees and the landscape. If you want to choose your walk based on a particular interest, this comparison offers a practical guide.

The château and priory in local history

The Château de la Ferrière was built at the end of the 17th century and incorporates part of the town’s fortifications. Alterations in the 19th century gave it a Neo-Renaissance character. The château has two round towers, one of which was converted into a viewpoint. The building thus brings together its later architectural character and its connection to the town’s fortifications.

The priory of Saint-Médard-en-Forez is documented in writing from the 13th century onward. It initially belonged to the priory of Montverdun and was later run by the Benedictines of La Chaise-Dieu Abbey. The town developed around the priory, while fortifications protected its center. The priory’s history can therefore also be connected to the town’s development: both its changing institutional affiliations and the formation of the town center are part of the story.

Townscape and practical information

Saint-Médard-en-Forez sits on a rocky promontory surrounded by streams. Alongside the larger buildings, there are other traces to discover in the town: you can explore numerous crosses on a walk. Visitors interested in local history can also look out for smaller religious landmarks and extend their visit beyond the château and priory.

The Sentier des moulins starts at Place de la Mairie and offers parking, public toilets and free access. Its availability depends on the weather and snow conditions. Check these before setting out if you plan to visit the trail.

The Aire de pique-nique du Bourg has dry toilets, covered tables, a children’s playground and a boules court. When planning your visit, you can therefore take into account a rest area with specific facilities, alongside the trails and historic sites.
