Saint-Germain-Laval sits on a hill above the River Aix, opposite the Forez plain; the Aix is a tributary of the Loire. Two clear themes can help you choose how to spend your stay: historical sights in the town and the riverside landscape. A marked historic walking tour and the Musée Municipal explore local history in different ways; the approximately one-hour route provides a clear timeframe. This lets you plan a stay around culture, riverside scenery, or a mix of the two, without turning the individual visits into a packed schedule.

Walking Tour and Historic Buildings

The historic walking tour is a marked, beginner-friendly, 2 km loop on foot and takes about an hour. Around 30 panels explain the town’s history and notable houses. Its length and approximate duration make it easy to plan as a separate activity. The route also passes a lapidary museum wall with local sculptures, some of which date from the 15th century.

The Maison Ă  colombages was built in the 15th century and expanded during the Renaissance. This half-timbered house is home to the Bistro Le Cheval Blanc, which operates as a bar and restaurant. A named building thus offers both a specific architectural history and a present-day use as a dining venue.

The Chapelle de la Madeleine is the castle chapel and was first mentioned as early as 1183; it was restored after being damaged in the Wars of Religion. The bell tower of the former chapel was listed as a historic monument by decree on 21 June 1952. The year 1183 refers to the chapel’s first mention, while the 1952 listing date applies to its bell tower.

The Musée Municipal

The Musée Municipal is on the first floor of the town hall. It displays several rare Aubusson tapestries from the 12th century, as well as numerous terracotta busts. While the panels on the historic walking tour explain the town’s history and notable houses, the museum offers a different way to explore the area through its art and collection objects.

The River Aix and Its Banks

The Chapelle de Baffy stands on the banks of the Aix, beside its medieval bridge. It was built in the 14th century to house the Black Madonna, known as “Notre Dame de Laval.” Nearby is the Aire de pique-nique Baffie, which is free to access and has parking and public toilets. Shaded picnic tables are located by the river. Check access and facilities before your visit.

The Aix is considered a clear, shady river in the Saint-Germain-Laval area. Anglers value it for its trout and grayling. A hike from the banks of the Aix to the heights of Nollieux leads to the Commanderie de Verrières, built by the Templars. Alongside the town’s buildings, the riverside landscape and another point of historical and cultural interest offer different themes to consider when planning your trip.

Brewing as Another Theme

Brasserie La Germanoise offers introductory beer-brewing workshops in a specially equipped room. It produces unfiltered, unpasteurized beers that undergo secondary fermentation in the bottle. The workshops add a distinct theme focused on beer production to the historic sights.
