Explore Rive-De-Gier through its industrial history and cultural offerings: the former Canal de Givors tells the story of a planned route between the Rhône and Loire, while the Puits Combélibert is a reminder of coal mining. There are also performance venues, a cinema and a garden in the town centre. When planning your visit, you can choose between historic landmarks, events and nature walks.

Canal History and Mining

The former Canal de Givors was intended to connect the Rhône and Loire. However, only the section between Givors and Rive-de-Gier was completed. The canal was inaugurated in 1781; for half a century, it supplied the Rive-de-Gier coal basin, before the railway displaced it. The canal’s history therefore represents both a specific infrastructure project and the changing nature of transport in the region.

The Puits Combélibert is another testament to the industrial heritage. The shaft was inaugurated in 1780 and originally reached a depth of 80 metres. In France, it is considered a rare and particularly emblematic relic of coal mining. Its headframe dates from 1855. The wooden headframe, the machinery building and the large chimney were listed as historic monuments by decree of 25 August 1995.

The town hall is also connected to the canal’s history: the Hôtel de Ville was formerly the canal company’s hotel. Its façades and roofs are part of the Canal de Givors heritage in Rive-de-Gier. Together, the canal, shaft and town hall offer different ways to explore the town’s industrial past.

Theatre, Cinema and Cultural Café

The Salle Jean Dasté in the town centre has 470 seats and a spacious stage for events. It regularly hosts concerts, theatre and dance performances, as well as other community events. The L’Imprimerie Café-Théâtre adds a year-round programme of comedy, music, magic and theatre. If you have a particular performance in mind, check the current events calendar before your visit: programmes change.

Ciné Chaplin has three air-conditioned screening rooms, a cultural café and fully renovated reception areas. It is accessible to people with reduced mobility. If accessibility is important for your visit, it is advisable to check the latest information in advance.

Garden and Nature Walks

Jardin des Plantes is in the town centre on Quai Fleurdelix, near Place de la Libération. Events are held there regularly during the warmer months. This offers a seasonal counterpoint to the historic industrial landmarks and year-round cultural programmes. As events are seasonal and dates may change, it is worth checking the current calendar before your visit.

The surrounding area is also part of the picture: its proximity to the Parc naturel régional du Pilat and the coteaux du Jarez makes Rive-de-Gier a starting point for nature walks. These are popular with hikers and cyclists. So, alongside the town’s cultural offerings, nature walks are another possible focus for your stay.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Rive-de-Gier is served by the SNCF rail network and the A47 motorway. New sections of cycle paths and 30 km/h zones are regularly being developed in the town; a cycling plan is currently being implemented. This offers a concrete insight into the development of local mobility, without implying any particular route or travel time. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore first consider whether industrial history, an event or walks in the surrounding area will be the main focus of your stay.
