Weekly markets in the Bourg, green spaces with different features, and a wetland with a circular trail give Mably several distinct facets. If you are considering a stay here, you can explore markets and local history, as well as walking trails, wildlife watching and recurring cultural events.

Markets in the Bourg and on route du Merlin

Mably’s food market takes place every Friday morning at Place Verdun in the Bourg. Another market is held on Mondays from 4 to 7 p.m. at the farm market at 1300 route du Merlin. Organic vegetables and local products are available there, including cheese, meat, poultry, eggs and bread. The two markets therefore differ in both their days and hours, as well as in what they offer. Check the times locally before your visit.

Green spaces with different features

In the heart of the Bourg is Parc de la Mairie, a peaceful green space for relaxation and admiring the local architecture. The park also highlights the history of the château and the aviary, and features other works of art. This green space thus brings together local architectural heritage and art in the park.

Parc Louise Michel offers different features. Covering 58,000 m², it has secure play areas for children, a fitness trail and shaded areas. At Étang du Merlin, there is a walking path and shaded picnic tables. The picnic area there covers 7.5 hectares and is considered a suitable place for fishing. The parks and green spaces therefore offer different activities: from architecture and art to play and exercise, as well as walking, picnicking and fishing.

Wetlands, a circular trail and a nature exhibition

Gravière aux Oiseaux is a wetland where visitors can discover wild fauna and flora. It is designated as an Espace Naturel Sensible and lies close to the Loire. A 2 km circular trail leads to observation points, a nest-box trail, tables and benches, and a plant maze. The named stops and facilities offer several points of interest along the trail, without requiring you to choose a longer cycling route.

The Maison de la Gravière features aquariums, taxidermied animals, educational games and projections. It also has a permanent exhibition on wetland fauna and flora. Mably therefore offers two distinct ways to explore nature: the trail and its facilities in the wetland, and the exhibition with its displays and educational activities.

Cycling and circular routes in Mably

The Véloire is an almost 140 km cycling route that passes through Mably and runs along the canal. On the “Le tour du canal” route, the path follows the canal’s towpath, which is designated as a Voie verte. Another option is “Bocage et botanique”: this signed circular route in Mably explores the Roannais-Bocage landscape, which is typical of livestock-farming regions.

The routes described also differ considerably in length: the circular trail at Gravière aux Oiseaux is 2 km long, while the Véloire covers almost 140 km. The signed “Bocage et botanique” loop has its own focus on the Roannais-Bocage landscape. You can therefore choose between a short circular trail in the wetland, a longer cycling route through Mably, and a signed loop focused on the landscape.

Cultural events and local history

Printemps de la Photo takes place in Mably every year from April to July. Fêtobourg is a three-day street arts festival held every year on the first weekend of September in the park-like grounds of Mably town hall. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the exact dates in advance.

The history of the landscape can also be traced through specific local features: clay deposits in Mably led to brickmaking and the creation of the hamlet of Les Tuileries. Together with the themes explored at Parc de la Mairie and the “Bocage et botanique” landscape loop, this offers further points of interest for a visit that takes in local history alongside nature and outdoor activities.
