Mont-De-Lans brings together Roman remains, village history and mountain scenery. The village lies in the Massif de l’Oisans on the edge of the Parc national des Écrins. Chasal Lento presents the local heritage, the Porte romaine de Bons brings the Roman road to life, and the Croix du Sert offers views of the valley and mountains. If you are looking for hotels, you can first consider whether history, architecture or scenery will be the main focus of your trip.
Mountain views and hiking trails
The Croix du Sert is located above the village. You can reach the viewpoint on foot from the village in less than ten minutes. The walk leads to a panorama of the Romanche Valley, Lac du Chambon and the surrounding mountains. This makes the view a clear scenic highlight to consider when planning your stay.
In Le Ponteil, former agricultural tracks are now hiking trails. This offers a different focus from the walk to the Croix du Sert: there, the goal is a view across the valley, lake and mountains, while in Le Ponteil the trails themselves reveal a history of earlier use. For a guided discovery tour, Rando'Nature et Patrimoine combines nature and local history. The hike along the Mont-de-Lans slope introduces the local fauna, flora and village history, and leads to the Café-musée Chasal Lento in the village. As this is a seasonal activity, check the current dates before your trip.
Village history and Roman heritage
In the center of the village, Chasal Lento is a museum and café where you can discover the local heritage. Topics covered include the Roman era, itinerant traders, the construction of the Chambon Dam and the early years of Les Deux Alpes. The selection brings together different chapters in the history of the people of the region rather than focusing on a single period.
At the Porte romaine de Bons, it is worth looking both at the structure and at the road associated with it. The gate is arched and was carved out of chlorite schist above the Romanche. The associated remains of the Roman road form part of a longer, continuous section of the Roman road over the Lautaret. The Porte romaine de Bons and these remains were listed as historic monuments by a decree dated April 18, 2014. There is also a chapel dating from 1893 in the hamlet of Bons.
Market and getting there
The village’s small market takes place on Wednesday mornings in the square in front of the town hall. Alongside fruit and vegetables, it offers mountain products and small-scale crafts; the selection may vary depending on the date and season. Before you travel, also check the market’s seasonal schedule.
At the Chambon Dam, a turnoff from the D213 leads directly to Mont-De-Lans and the resort of Les Deux Alpes. You can also reach Mont-De-Lans from Les Deux Alpes by taking the Mont de Lans chairlift or a free shuttle. Their operating schedules may vary by season, so take this into account when planning your day. This lets you weigh up travel options and interests separately: the road turnoff is one option, while the chairlift and shuttle are the stated connections from Les Deux Alpes.
There are different options to shape the focus of your stay: Chasal Lento and the Roman road remains offer insights into history, the Croix du Sert offers a mountain panorama, and Le Ponteil has former agricultural tracks that are now used for hiking.
