A medieval tower on a section of the town wall and a formal garden dating from the early 18th century give Moirans two distinct historical landmarks. Parks, wetlands and a traditional market add to the picture. You can choose a hotel in Moirans based on the themes that matter to you during your stay: heritage, green spaces or the market scene.

History across the ages

The Circuit historique de Moirans is a walking route where visitors can discover the town’s heritage through remains from antiquity and the Middle Ages. Its historical timeline spans from the Gallo-Roman period to the Industrial Revolution. In the Gallo-Roman era, Moirans was called Morginum and was crossed by a Roman road. Those interested in the town’s development can explore very different periods within a single historical context.

A historical trail with 14 stops presents the development of the town’s districts, its residents and notable places in Moirans over time. Signage and route details may change.

The medieval tower is the only surviving part of the former castle of Moirans. It stands on a section of a medieval town wall dating from the 13th or 14th century. The tower therefore recalls both the former castle and the town’s medieval fortifications.

The Église prieurale Saint-Pierre was founded at the beginning of the 11th century and is one of the oldest priories in the Dauphiné. The church features stained-glass windows signed by Arcabas. Its history is marked both by its early foundation and by this distinctive artistic detail.

Gardens, green spaces and activity

The Parc de la Grille is a formal French garden. It was designed by Maximilien Ernest Curten, a pupil of Versailles gardener Le Nôtre, and laid out by Claude Paris La Montagne in 1720–1721. The park’s iron gate and the steps of its water basin have been listed in the inventory of historic monuments since 1927. The garden thus combines a clearly documented history with the protected status of its historic features.

The Parc du Vergeron is landscaped and wooded. A footbridge connects it peacefully with the Parc aux Iles for walkers and people exercising. The Parc du Vergeron is open free of charge every day throughout the year; check local access information before your visit as a precaution.

The Les Isles de Moirans wetlands are considered a green oasis of biodiversity. As wetlands, they have a different character from the landscaped and wooded parks and offer another perspective on the landscape of Moirans.

Market and practical information

The traditional market takes place on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at place de l’Assemblée Départementale, in front of the town hall. More than 34 mobile vendors, including 27 regular stallholders, offer mainly food products: fish, fruit and vegetables, produce from local producers, cheese, grilled dishes and prepared meals, artisan bread, meat and charcuterie, artisan pasta, delicatessen items, eggs and honey. Market times and offerings may change, so check the details before you travel.

Moirans main railway station is on the Grenoble–Lyon line. As train schedules may change, check current connections before travelling. Together with the specific opening and market times, this information can help you coordinate your arrival and planned activities.
