Visitors choosing Teyssières as a destination can focus on several specific themes: the old village with its stone houses and calades, agriculture centered on lavender and aromatic plants, and activities in the mountains and at the pass. There are also historic buildings and local production of essential oils. This makes it possible to plan a trip around village history, local production or outdoor activities.
Landscape and orientation
Teyssières is part of the Parc Naturel des Baronnies. Several hamlets lie in a landscape of lavender fields, walnut and chestnut trees, and gray marl soils. Elevations range from 498 to 1,325 meters. The Lez rises on the slopes of Montagne de la Lance, southeast of Rocher Garaux, within the commune. The elevation range, hamlets and source area offer different points of reference for understanding Teyssières’ landscape.
Old village and historic buildings
The old village of Teyssières consists of stone houses and calades, or cobbled lanes. It lies along the D130, two kilometers from the Moulin district. On the descent from Montagne de la Lance, the GR de Pays passes through the old village. The village center and route can therefore be included in travel plans as a specific combination of local history and hiking.
The Church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul dates from the 19th century and was built on the site of an older church. Above its portal is a twin-arched window, a distinctive architectural feature. The ruins of Château d’Audefrey stand on a rocky outcrop and are visible from the road via Col de Valouse.
Lavender and local production
The cultivation of lavender and aromatic plants, which also grow wild in the mountains, plays an important role in Teyssières’ agriculture. Essential oils are produced mostly on site at a traditional distillery. A family-run distillery in Teyssières uses a traditional steam process and lavandin straw. The lavandin essence is organic and is used primarily in cosmetic products. Local plants are therefore connected to everything from cultivation to a specific product and its main use.
The municipal facilities also include a sports and climbing hall and an open-air theater, provided by the commune of Teyssières.
Hiking and outdoor activities
Around Col de Coucourdet, there are opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and climbing. From Col de Coucourdet, you can also hike around a mountain that rises to 1,061 meters. The Cougoir Circuit takes experienced hikers through striking scenery to the rocky Cougoir spur. The circuit is intended for experienced hikers and leads to a clearly named destination; at Col de Coucourdet, mountain biking and climbing are also available alongside hiking. This distinction helps with planning: a specific hike with a destination and experience level is set apart from an area offering several types of activity.
