Sainte-Jalle offers cultural and historical discoveries and two hiking routes with different durations and route details. The heritage highlights include the Romanesque Notre-Dame-de-Beauvert church, the Chapelle Saint-Anastase, and medieval remains. Walking time, type of activity, and route character are useful distinctions when choosing a trail.

Romanesque Church and Medieval Heritage

Notre-Dame-de-Beauvert is a Romanesque church dating from the late 12th century. Until the beginning of the 15th century, it was the seat of a Cluniac priory in the Diocese of Sisteron. The Drôme’s official heritage list, updated in January 2024, lists both as historic monuments: the listing order for Notre-Dame-de-Beauvert is dated July 17, 1926, and that for the Chapelle Saint-Anastase, December 21, 1984.

The construction period, former role as a priory, and later protected status describe different stages in the history of Notre-Dame-de-Beauvert. Sainte-Jalle’s medieval heritage also includes the remains of the castle, the old town walls, and several round towers. These architectural traces broaden the picture beyond the religious buildings. The Romanesque church and the chapel can therefore be considered as distinct features alongside the other historical remains.

Hiking: Duration, Route Character, and Views

The Tour du Deves loop takes up to about 1 hour and 45 minutes at a leisurely walking pace. It starts at the Platanenweg car park; from there, the route climbs through an oak forest. At a viewpoint, Sainte-Jalle and Mont Ventoux appear in the same panorama. This provides a specific starting point, a described route, and a named view for planning.

The Tour du bois d’Embrun takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes as a hike, or 2 hours at a leisurely walking pace. It reaches the ridge of the wooded area and then descends eastwards. The route is challenging and follows little-known paths, with views of Arpavon, Rochebrune, and Mont Ventoux. Along with its viewpoints, the duration, ridge, and descent give the route its own character.

When comparing durations directly, the type of activity matters: the Deves is listed as taking up to about 1 hour and 45 minutes at a leisurely walking pace; for the Bois d’Embrun, separate times are given for hiking and leisurely walking. The walking times are therefore similar in length. The landscapes also offer specific differences: on the Deves, Sainte-Jalle and Mont Ventoux appear together in the panorama, while the Bois d’Embrun route description mentions views of Arpavon, Rochebrune, and Mont Ventoux. You can therefore weigh the duration, type of activity, and named views separately.

A Specific Accommodation Tip

For overnight planning, Sainte-Jalle’s municipal campsite is a specific option to consider. It is located by the Ennuyée River and close to the starting points of numerous hiking trails.
