La Coucourde stretches for 4 km along the RN7 and lies about 10 km north of Montélimar. These details place the town geographically. Two themes stand out as a guide to its character: the history of the town hall, the ford and earlier routes, and the natural and recreational attractions along the water. You can therefore consider cultural history and landscape as distinct focuses for a trip.

Town Hall, Village and Earlier Routes

A former inn now houses the town hall. The town hall’s wedding room features a fireplace with a carved mantel dated 1671. The building’s former use and its dated architectural feature offer different points of connection: the inn is part of its history of use, while the mantel is a specific architectural detail.

Lachamp, a former fortified village, lies at the eastern end of La Coucourde. A historic ford across the Leyne was defended by the Château de la tour de Leyne, or Leyne Tower Castle. Lachamp and the ford thus represent different aspects of local history: a fortified village and a guarded river crossing.

The scallop shell on the coat of arms represents pilgrims who passed through the town on the routes to Santiago de Compostela. A local, disputed interpretation of the name La Coucourde points to a possible inn sign depicting a golden squash. It connects “courge d’or” with the Provençal “cougourde”; this explanation remains a possibility, not a confirmed origin. Both the pilgrim connection and an uncertain tradition about the name are therefore part of the town’s historical themes.

La Coucourde was originally a stopping place on the royal road between Paris and Marseille. Carriage and boat travelers, along with their draft animals, stopped there to rest. This role as a stopping place adds the everyday experience of past travel to the town’s history. The royal road is part of the history of transport and travel, while the RN7 describes the town’s geographical extent.

Nature and Water

The Île du Rhône à Meysse et La Coucourde nature area is a Type 1 ZNIEFF and covers 385 hectares. Reeds or naturally grown trees and shrubs flourish on the islands in this area. Several heron species find breeding habitat there; their presence and breeding activity vary by season. This natural setting offers a different focus from the historic buildings, centering on island vegetation and habitats.

Riverside promenades are suitable for fishing. This offers two distinct nature and recreation activities: fishing along the promenades, and the vegetated islands and seasonal breeding habitat in the nature area.

A report from December 2020 mentions a sailing program run by the water sports center at Domaine des Roches in La Coucourde. In partnership with Club ASGE Drôme Ardèche, sailing was offered there from April to October. If sailing is important to your travel plans, check in advance whether the program is still running and how to take part.
