Grignan reveals itself through several facets: the palace on the rocky outcrop above the village, the architecture of the Saint-Sauveur collegiate church, and routes that connect local history with a varied cultural landscape. When planning your visit, it helps to decide whether to focus on buildings and theatre or choose a walk through the countryside. These places offer different ways to experience history, architecture and nature.

Château de Grignan: Architecture and Views

The Château de Grignan is a Renaissance and Neoclassical palace on a rocky outcrop above the village. It has been listed as a Monument historique since 1993 and recognised as a Musée de France. An exterior visit includes the main façade, the bosquet garden, the fountain courtyard and a panoramic terrace. From the terrace, enjoy 360-degree views of Mont Ventoux, Provence and the village of Grignan. As visiting arrangements may change, check the current conditions before your visit. The architecture, garden and views come together as different facets of the same visit.

Renaissance and Gothic Styles at Saint-Sauveur

The Saint-Sauveur collegiate church was built between 1535 and 1542 at the initiative of Baron Louis Adhémar. The building brings together a Renaissance façade and a Gothic interior. The roof terrace is also part of its architectural history: it was included in the original design and given a balustrade in 1680. The church offers a chance to observe different architectural features and building phases without reducing it to a single style.

Two Circular Routes on the Discovery Trail

The Grignan discovery trail on local history follows the route of the former tramway and begins at the Grotte de Rochecourbière. Choose between circular routes of 2.5 and 4.5 kilometres. The routes differ by two kilometres, giving you a practical basis for deciding whether to include the shorter or longer walk in your plans.

The trail passes cultivated truffle plantations, riparian woodland, lavender fields, vineyards, farmland, woods and forests. The landscape ranges from cultivated land to wooded areas. Local works may affect access and change the route, so check the trail before setting out.

The Grotte de Rochecourbière

The Grotte de Rochecourbière was landscaped in the 17th century by the Countess of Grignan. It was a popular place for walks near the château, where picnics were also held in summer. This historical role adds another link to local history and the walking culture around Grignan.

Theatre, Village Tour and Market

The Fêtes nocturnes de Grignan began in 1987. Every summer, they present a specially created theatrical production in front of the façade of the Château de Grignan. If you would like to combine your visit with a performance, check the dates before planning your trip.

A guided tour introduces 1,000 years of history and takes you through the village’s picturesque lanes. Availability and booking details may change, so check them in advance. This offers two distinct ways to explore local history: a guided route through the lanes or the discovery trail, with its two route lengths and the landscapes along the way.

Grignan’s market offers produce from local farmers, colourful fabrics and clothing, pottery and handmade goods. The selection may vary depending on the season and which vendors attend. The market complements the buildings and walking routes with a changing range of regional produce and handmade goods.
