Misérieux can be explored through two themes: the mosaic landscape of the Domaine naturel de Cibeins and the architectural and ownership history surrounding Saint-Martin and Cibeins. The natural area lies in the municipalities of Misérieux, Ars-sur-Formans and Sainte-Euphémie and covers a total of 81 hectares. When planning your trip, you can consider whether nature observation, architecture or history should be your main focus.
Natural Areas and Wildlife
Forests, wetlands and meadows create a varied landscape in the Domaine naturel de Cibeins. The natural area is home to a diverse range of wildlife and plant life, including a wide variety of birds and eleven known bat species. The species mentioned include the black woodpecker, kingfisher and Bechstein's bat. Their presence can vary seasonally, so it is worth taking the time of year into account if you have a particular interest in wildlife observation.
The Domaine naturel is easily accessible. One of the entrances has step-free access for people with reduced mobility.
Outdoor Activities
You can walk or cycle in the Parc de Cibeins all year round. Fishing is also possible there, in the shade of centuries-old trees. A fishing route runs along the Formans and the Morbier in the municipalities of Misérieux, Toussieux and Sainte-Euphémie. These activities offer different ways to enjoy the area: walking and cycling in the park, fishing beneath the trees, or following the route along two rivers.
Church and Architectural History
The Saint-Martin parish church is first mentioned in 984. A renovation in the 16th century is considered likely; between 1865 and 1868, the church was extensively renovated and enlarged. Its architecture is characterised by rib vaults. Above the apse is a coat-of-arms keystone, so this stone detail adds a distinctive feature alongside the shape of the vault.
The listed Château de Cibeins complex includes a park, an open-air theatre, a pond, a burial chapel, an orangery and agricultural buildings. The complex therefore extends beyond a single building, encompassing open spaces and a range of functional buildings. The private Baroque burial chapel of the Counts of Cibeins was built in 1707 and consecrated in 1718. Construction and consecration are two separate historical milestones; the chapel remains classified as a private burial chapel.
A Local History with Specific Dates
The history of the Cibeins estate is also linked to a precisely dated event. On 30 November 1918, the last descendant of the Cholier de Cibeins family symbolically sold her 53-hectare estate to the city of Lyon so that an agricultural school could be established there.
If you are considering Misérieux as a destination, it helps to distinguish between nature and culture: the Domaine naturel represents habitats and wildlife, while Saint-Martin and the Château de Cibeins complex offer different insights into architecture and history. The Parc de Cibeins also offers walking, cycling and fishing.
