A one-hour walk and a longer hike offer different highlights in Lompnieu. The Sentier Botanique combines the discovery of local flora with a lovely view of the Colombier. La Creuse runs above the village; from there, the view extends across the Valromey, with the Grand Colombier visible in the background. The Église Saint-Michel offers a distinct cultural and historical focus: its architecture and furnishings point to different centuries.

Hiking by Duration and Elevation Profile

The Sentier Botanique is three kilometres long, with a stated walking time of one hour and an elevation gain of 80 metres. As a family trail, it offers an opportunity to discover the local flora and identify different species. There is also a lovely view of the Colombier. This trail brings together a clearly defined time commitment, plant observation and scenic views.

La Creuse is a 6.5-kilometre hike, with a stated duration of two hours and 15 minutes and 180 metres of elevation gain. It runs above Lompnieu and offers lovely views across the Valromey, with the Grand Colombier visible in the background. Its duration and elevation profile therefore differ considerably from those of the Sentier Botanique.

Comparing the stated routes directly, the difference is 3.5 kilometres, one hour and 15 minutes of walking time, and 100 metres of elevation gain. La Creuse therefore requires more time to plan for. As route information may be updated, it is advisable to consult the municipal hiking guide before setting out.

Architecture and Furnishings of the Église Saint-Michel

The Église Saint-Michel in Lompnieu is designed in the Flamboyant Gothic style of the 15th century. The apse and bell tower, by contrast, date from the 19th century. The church therefore brings together distinct periods of construction: the stylistic classification refers to the 15th century, while two named parts of the building are from a later era.

The choir contains an altar made of polychrome wood. Its 18th-century-style paintwork imitates marble; the altar comes from Arvières Abbey. The church’s exterior architecture also includes a massive porch, considered characteristic of the churches of the Haut Valromey. Its style, building elements and furnishings thus offer several points of reference for viewing the church beyond a single construction date.

Château-Rouge and Its Ruins

Château-Rouge was a fortified fiefdom with a castle and was under the jurisdiction of the Châtellenie de Châteauneuf en Valromey. It was destroyed during the conquest of Bresse. The ruins of Château-Rouge are located in Chavillieu. The focus here is the history of a fortified estate, while the Église Saint-Michel offers different perspectives on architecture, construction periods and furnishings.

The hikes differ above all in their stated time commitment, elevation gain and connection to the landscape. The architecture of the Église Saint-Michel and the history of Château-Rouge provide additional, separate topics. You can decide which of these to prioritise in your plans based on the balance you want between hiking, landscapes and architectural history.
