Ferney-Voltaire can be explored with different amounts of time: from a visit to the Château de Voltaire to a narrated walk around the town centre or longer themed tours. Ceramics, neoclassical architecture and greenways also shape the programme. When planning your visit, it’s worth comparing the duration and different focuses of the activities.
The Château de Voltaire and its heritage
The Château de Voltaire is listed as a historic monument and has held the French Ministry of Culture’s “Maison des illustres” designation since 22 June 2012. You can visit the building and park independently, without a reservation. Depending on how much you choose to see, the visit takes between 45 minutes and two hours. During school holidays, the château offers visits and workshops for children aged 6 to 12.
There is also a convenient public transport connection for your visit: TPG bus 60 runs from Geneva’s Cornavin station to the Ferney-Mairie stop; from there, it’s a five-minute walk to the château. Check the current timetable before setting off and the visitor information in effect before your visit.
Discover the town’s history on foot
The free “Promenade culturelle” takes you through the town centre and is available via the municipal smartphone app. Professional actors tell the story of the town in French, English or Spanish. The route is 3 kilometres long; 40 minutes of walking and 20 minutes of listening are indicated. Walking and listening times are therefore listed separately and can be factored into your day’s plans.
The guided tour “Au pays de Voltaire, les beaux esprits se rencontrent” offers a different way to plan your time: it lasts an hour and a half and follows a route of about 2 kilometres. Compared with the “Promenade culturelle”, the guided tour covers a shorter stated distance but takes longer than the combined stated walking and listening time for the app tour. You can choose between the app-based walk and the guided tour based on your schedule and preferred format.
Ceramics, architecture and theatre
The “Un tour du côté du rouge Ferney” tour introduces the techniques used to make glazed ceramics in Ferney-Voltaire. It features three ceramic workshops whose work is on display: Eugène Hécler, René Nicole and Paul Ami Bonifas. The focus is therefore on the craft techniques and the three workshops named.
Guided visits to the Notre-Dame-et-Saint-André church include a brief history of its construction and an architectural study of the neoclassical building. The church is considered the largest neoclassical religious building constructed in the Ain département. The Maison du Pays de Voltaire also houses a former theatre: Léonard Racle set it up in a warehouse, and it opened in 1776 in the presence of the actor Le Kain.
Theatre is also part of the cultural scene: La Comédie de Ferney has hosted the Compagnie Thalie in residence since 1994. The company offers workshops for adults and children and develops performances. The seasonal “Fête à Voltaire” programme combines street theatre, contemporary music, permanent stages and roaming performers, including professionals and volunteers.
Green spaces and time outdoors
The Allée de la Tire forms the historic axis between the Château de Voltaire and the forests of La Bagasse. The Allée et parc de la Tire has children’s playgrounds, a fitness trail, a multi-sport court and picnic tables. One of its main avenues features quotations by Voltaire.
The round trip along the “Allée et parc de la Tire” route is listed as taking about an hour. An alternative route along the airport runways and via the La Bagasse path takes approximately an hour and a half. Comparing the routes can help you plan your time; check local route conditions before setting out.
Weekly market and Centre nautique
The Ferney-Voltaire weekly market takes place every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you’re planning a visit, it’s worth checking the latest market information. You should also check the relevant programme details for the seasonal “Fête à Voltaire” event.
The Centre nautique has an indoor swimming pool with a heated leisure pool, a 25-metre swimming pool, an outdoor paddling pool and a relaxation area with a sauna and hammam. Activities on offer include water familiarisation, water aerobics, aquabiking, swimming lessons for adults and a swimming school for children. Aquabiking is available to participants aged 16 and over. As activities and arrangements may change, check the Centre nautique’s latest information before your visit.
