Champfromier offers three marked and secured walking and hiking routes, as well as the Sous Roche climbing area. Natural and cultural sites round out the options. You can focus on a longer hike, rock climbing, or historic sites. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Hikes: Views and Time Required
The “Le Cirque des Avalanches” circular hike starts at the Champfromier community hall. It is 15 kilometers long, marked in yellow, includes 550 meters of elevation gain, and takes four hours. From Les Avalanches, the route offers views of the Jura Mountains. Weather and trail conditions can affect the hike; take them into account when planning.
The “Le Dragon Sous-Roche” hiking trail follows the banks of the Valserine and passes old stone bridges, a power station with an unusual history, and a customs hut. The two-hour hike starts at the Pierre Percée site. Duration is not the only difference: the Dragon highlights the riverside route and historic structures, while the Cirque focuses on views of the Jura Mountains.
Rock Climbing at Sous Roche
Sous Roche is the main draw for climbing enthusiasts. The climbing area has more than 100 routes graded from 5a to 8a; the number of routes may change over time. The limestone cliffs are an average of 60 meters high and 500 meters long.
Landscape and Local History
The Combe d’Evuaz lies at an elevation of about 1,100 meters and is a natural area inviting exploration. It is the hamlet farthest from Champfromier town center and lies on the border with La Pesse in the Jura. The former grazing and haymaking landscape has been reclaimed by the forest.
In the center of Champfromier is the Pont d’Enfer washhouse, considered the municipality’s finest covered washhouse complex. At the La Borne au Lion site, information panels explain what makes the place special; there are also picnic tables and a shelter. La Borne au Lion is both a cultural and historical site and a natural one.
The Pierre Percée site is the starting point of the “Le Dragon Sous-Roche” hiking trail and also a stop on the “Voie du Tram.” It takes its name from a waterfall that has carved a hole in a rock plateau. The reception for the PHC de la Chandelette “Musée” is currently located at Grange de la Chandelette, 1315 route du Bordaz, in Champfromier. If you plan to visit the PHC de la Chandelette “Musée,” check the current address again before your visit.
