Murs lies at an altitude of 500 metres in the Monts de Vaucluse and in the northern part of the Parc naturel régional du Luberon. Buildings from different centuries, connections to the landscape and an annual festival give a stay different points of focus. The history of the village can be traced through specific buildings; the Carmentran, usually held in March, is also a factor when planning a trip. Visitors choosing Murs as a destination can therefore plan their visit around either its enduring cultural and landscape features or the festival.

Landscape and distinctive natural features

Murs’s elevation in the Monts de Vaucluse and its position in the northern part of the Parc naturel régional du Luberon define its landscape setting. One distinctive natural feature is the Chêne de Murs: the tree has a circumference of 6.80 metres and is 24 metres tall.

Building history across several periods

Château de Murs was built in several phases between the 12th and 18th centuries. Église Saint-Loup also has a history dating back to the Middle Ages: it was built in the late 12th century in the Romanesque style and served both as a seigneurial chapel and as a church.

Another link to the history of Château de Murs is the Maison natale de Crillon le Brave, a Renaissance extension to the château. Louis des Balbes de Berton de Crillon, known as “le brave Crillon”, was born there in 1541. Today, the building houses Murs’s small village library. If you plan to visit the interior, check whether this is possible locally. The building thus brings together its historical origins and its present-day use as a library.

The Chapelle Notre-Dame adds a distinctive architectural form to the picture: its floor plan is asymmetrical, and an additional building is attached to it. Its red plaster is associated with the nearby ochre quarries of Roussillon. The chapel therefore stands out both for its architectural form and its connection to the landscape’s ochre, while Église Saint-Loup is defined above all by its date and former function.

Carmentran and other themes

The Carmentran de Murs is a traditional festival held annually, usually in March. It includes a costumed musical parade and the trial of King Carmentran. Unlike the building history, which can be read in structures from different centuries, this festival gives a specific seasonal focus. Exact dates vary; if you are planning your trip around it, check the festival date for your intended travel period.

The “Amonts des gorges de Véroncle” route is also associated with a notable natural site, distinctive hydraulic remains and rural heritage. These themes offer a different focus from the architecture and festival tradition. When deciding on your trip, you can therefore consider whether you are most interested in the building history, Carmentran or the combination of natural and cultural heritage.

Planning your journey and accommodation

Bus route 109 runs from Apt to the Mairie de Murs by prior reservation. Check the current timetable and reservation requirements before travelling, as transport arrangements and booking deadlines may change. This known connection provides a specific travel option, without making any claims about other transport options or journey time.

If you want Carmentran to be the focus of your stay, first confirm the relevant festival date before arranging your accommodation around it. If the buildings and landscape are more important to you, they can provide the focus regardless of the festival date. Plan your journey on bus route 109 separately, based on the reservation requirements and timetable. This keeps the practical decisions about travel dates, purpose and transport clearly separate.
