Saint-Martin-de-Pallières in Provence combines a historic village centre with a château, an unusual underground site and hiking trails of varying lengths. Narrow lanes lined by high stone walls lead to more open squares shaded by plane trees. For a short stay, choosing one clear focus is better than trying to fit in a château visit and both hikes in one day. Check the actual visiting hours before choosing accommodation.

Château and underground site

The Château et Parc de Saint Martin was built in the 13th century and extensively remodelled in several periods. Its layout is square, with a tower at each corner. The château and park can be visited by prior reservation; this does not mean that walk-in visits are possible. The Cathédrale Souterraine covers more than 500 square metres and has been protected as a Monument historique since 2003. It is a cultural attraction in its own right, not simply a room in the château.

In July and August, the Cathédrale Souterraine hosts the “Les Concerts en Voûtes” classical music festival on Wednesdays. This seasonal information describes the festival, but is no substitute for a current programme or ticket reservation. If you are travelling for a concert, confirm the date and availability first, then choose accommodation. Historic protection status also does not guarantee that the site is open every day of the week.

Two hikes with different levels of effort

The Chemin des Crêtes is described as an easy, seven-kilometre hike taking about two hours and 15 minutes. It climbs through woodland and passes an old grain threshing floor on the way back to the village. The walking time is a guide and may vary depending on the weather and your fitness. If you have only half a day, this route may be a better option to consider than the much longer alternative.

“Les sens du paysage” starts at the car park below the Bistrot de Pays on the D470 and is 19 kilometres long. The route leads to the Chapelle Saint-Étienne, a 17th-century chapel. The oratory near the chapel offers views of the village and château. The route also follows the former Nice–Meyrargues railway line, the section from Rians to Fox-Amphoux of which is being developed as part of EuroVelo 8. A planned upgrade does not mean that a fully signposted cycling route is already in place.

Planning your stay

La Ferme des Jovents makes traditional cheese and farm-made ice cream on site. If you would like to visit the farm, check the actual sales or visiting hours. The château, concert and hike each have different requirements: a reservation, a confirmed date or suitable fitness. Compare accommodation by exact location, price and conditions; the local information does not include current room availability or guaranteed travel times between the sites.
