Réallon combines views of Lac de Serre-Ponçon with nature and cultural experiences. Part of the town lies within Écrins National Park. The Fort de Réallon, hiking and discovery trails, geological formations, and seasonal activities for different pursuits are among the features that can shape a stay.

Landscape between the lake and the national park

Réallon overlooks Lac de Serre-Ponçon. In the upper part of the Réallon Valley, beyond the hamlet of Les Gourniers, the valley lies in the heart of Écrins National Park. This offers different landscape settings: views of the lake in one part of the municipality and the protected upper valley farther beyond Les Gourniers.

A distinctive geological landscape can be found at Les Oucanes, within the Aiguilles de Chabrières. Les Oucanes is a limestone pavement with more than 20 straight fissures. Some are up to 25 metres deep. The number and depth of the fissures give a tangible sense of this striking landform, without associating it with any particular hiking route.

Fort and church in the main village

The main village’s heritage features include a 12th-century fort and the 16th-century Église Saint Pelade. Fort de Réallon has a square keep built in the 12th century. Its surrounding wall is 77 metres long and 35 metres wide. These dimensions give an impression of the site, while the church provides another historical landmark in the main village.

The path to the fort leads to a plateau of meadows. From there, the panorama stretches from the summit of Barle to Lac de Serre-Ponçon. Those interested in both heritage and landscape will find both reflected in the description of the route: the fort as its destination and the view from the plateau beyond.

Hiking and nature watching

Réallon has numerous hiking trails and short discovery walks. One specific option is the Prince and the Shepherd Discovery Trail: a gentle circular route with barely 100 metres of elevation gain. The stated walking time of 1.5 to 2 hours includes breaks for play, making it more useful for planning than a time estimate that leaves such breaks unspecified.

In the upper Réallon Valley, chamois are relatively easy to spot, especially in autumn during the rut and in winter. Those who want to focus on this nature experience can take the season into account: the times mentioned for chamois watching differ from the seasonal summer activities available locally.

Activities with different focuses

The Réallon Bike Park has a discovery area for children, eight downhill trails and four enduro routes. The bike park therefore offers several clearly defined areas and disciplines. Réallon Adventure is a high ropes course in a larch forest at an altitude of 1,560 metres. Its opening times are seasonal, so travel plans should take the relevant season into account.

After hiking or mountain biking, the Base de loisirs de l’Iscle in Les Gourniers offers the opportunity to swim in the Laccas body of water. Opening times may vary by season. The leisure centre also houses the Écrins National Park visitor centre. This makes it both a place for a specific leisure activity and a point of contact for information about the national park.

Winter sports and when to visit

Near Les Gourniers, the Domaine nordique de Réallon offers around 30 kilometres of cross-country ski trails. Trail availability is seasonal. Compared with the hiking trails and bike park, this is a distinctly winter-focused activity; chamois watching in the upper valley is also mentioned especially for autumn and winter. When choosing when to visit, it is therefore worth distinguishing between the ski trails, the seasonal opening times of individual leisure activities and the stated periods for nature watching.
