Senas offers a variety of discoveries: trails along the Durance, the rocky La Cabre hill in the garrigue, and traces of local heritage. For your stay, you can choose from an 8.5-kilometre Voie verte between Senas and Mallemort, a signposted walking route, and the Perrier-Redon cycling route. The routes differ in character and scenery: along the Durance, on a named walking trail, or by bike through orchards with views of the Luberon Massif.
On foot: trails along the Durance and on La Cabre
The route developed as a Voie verte runs for 8.5 kilometres along the Durance between Senas and Mallemort. Along the greenway, there are picnic and rest areas, viewpoints and a car park. This lets you combine exercise with a break or a stop to enjoy the view. Check current route information before setting out.
La Cabre et la Pécoule is a signposted walking route in Senas. La Cabre itself is a rocky outcrop of garrigue with a fitness trail for walkers. The Chapel of Sainte-Marie des Méjeans stands in ruins on the hill; a lime kiln is also located there. The chapel and lime kiln add specific historical traces to the hill’s natural character. Walkers can also discover the rare but clearly recognisable remains of the former castle complex of Senas.
Another walking trail was created around the two Malespine lakes. The routes and destinations therefore differ in their described features: the greenway has a specified length and rest areas, while the La Cabre et la Pécoule walk is signposted. For both routes, check current trail conditions before setting out.
Cycling through orchards
The Perrier-Redon cycling route starts and ends at the Senas Tourist Office. It passes through orchards and offers views of the Luberon Massif. Both the start and finish, as well as two of the route’s defining landscape features, are clearly specified. By contrast, the Voie verte is described by its length of 8.5 kilometres and its route along the Durance between Senas and Mallemort. Check the route information before setting off on the cycling route.
Landscape, culture and events
Senas is a predominantly agricultural commune in the fertile Durance plain, surrounded by extensive orchards and vegetable-growing areas. This landscape is an important part of the area’s character; the orchard landscape is also a defining feature of the Perrier-Redon cycling route.
The Church of Saint-Amand features 19th-century frescoes. Its paintings, baptismal font, holy water stoup and statues were carefully restored in 2009. A bridge known as the “Roman bridge” crosses the Canal des Alpines and is dated to 1812. The two Malespine lakes and their walking trail, the church and the bridge offer different cultural and landscape features to explore independently of the hiking and cycling routes described here.
Events in Senas include the FĂŞte votive de la Saint-Amand; its dates vary from year to year. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the dates for your travel year.
